Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB falls to Jayhawks in preseason finale

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A cold first quarter for Washburn women's basketball was too much to recover from as it closed the preseason schedule on Sunday with an 87-43 loss to Kansas. The Ichabods, which open the regular season at Municipal Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 9 against Augustana (S.D.), were held to 3 of 9 from the floor while surrendering 12 points on 11 turnovers.

Washburn was outmatched against their Division I counterparts, scoring its first points of the contest at the 5:23 mark as Shelbe Piggie made a back door cut for a layup to make it 11-2. The Jayhawks tallied the next 11 consecutive points before the Ichabods closed on a 5-2 run, trailing 24-7.

In spite of shooting 2 of 11 from the field, the Ichabods were more competitive in the second, holding Kansas to 3 for 13 shooting. With neither side finding the bottom of net during regular play, the bulk of the scoring came from the charity stripe. Washburn faired well, converting 6 of 10 from the line but again was out done by its opponent as the Jayhawks were an efficient 10 of 12 and took a 41-17 lead into the break.

The second half saw much of the same for Washburn, which was outscored 46-26, and completed 9 of 32 from the field and 2 of 9 from behind the arc, while the Jayhawks converted 17 of 36 from the floor, with a slightly better 3 of 9 from three-point land.

Alexis McAfee was a bright spot for Washburn offensively, finishing with a team-best 12 points including seven in the third. The junior guard also led the rebounding effort, pulling down a team-best eight boards, while Hunter Bentley followed with six.

Not other Ichabod scored more than five points or rebounds.

Collectively, Washburn shot 14 of 52 from the field, including just two from long-range, while KU knocked down 26 of 69, and tallied 30 points on 24 turnovers.
