Offense explodes, Baseball outlasts the Storm in slugfest

DURANT, Okla. --- The bats were working for the Washburn Ichabod baseball team on Monday as its offense exploded for season highs in hits and runs in a 15-14 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State in non-conference action. The result sealed series win, 3-1, while also snapping an eight-game losing streak for the Ichabods (7-16). The 29 combined runs marked the program's fourth-highest scoring contest since 2000 and was the second-most runs scored since April 26, 2014, when Washburn and Northeastern State combined for 45 runs.

After being held scoreless in the first, Washburn quickly trailed as the Savage Storm (10-16) scored twice in the first, before plating four more in the second to take a 6-1 lead.

In the third, the Washburn offensive came alive as it trimmed the deficit to one as it plated four runs during the frame. Brady Hoover opened the scoring with an RBI single to plate Javis Larson before Steve Jacobson pushed across Josh Crosby with a two-out single to make it 6-3. Joel Spain then scored Jacobson and Hoover with a single through the left to make it 6-5.

SOSU however mirrored the Ichabod offensive efforts in the stanza's bottom half as it capitalized on a wild pitch before ringing up a three-run homer to open a 10-5 lead.

With Washburn's bats continuing to swing away in the fourth, the Ichabods managed to produce game-high five-run inning. Hoover again kicked off the scoring as his double down the line ushered in runs by Jake Hahn and Larson. Crosby then registered his second run of the afternoon thanks to a single from Jacobson. Then with bases loaded, Spain drew an RBI walk, before Cole Emerson replicated the at-bat and also collected a base-on-ball RBI, tying the game 10.

After SOSU scored once in the sixth to take an 11-10 lead, the Ichabods quickly responded in the seventh as Bowe Behymer launched a two-out two-run blast to give Washburn a 12-11 advantage and its first lead of the day. Following a single by Jacobson, Spain added to the Ichabod cause with his second home run of the day making it 14-11. Spain finished the day hitting 3-for-5, while his six RBI not only was a career-best, but also has him tied for second-most RBI in a single-game.

Scoring for both sides was capped in during the eighth. After getting plunked for the third time, Larson eventually crossed home on a Hoover RBI. Larson finished the day with a team-best three runs despite going 0-for-3 at the plate. Hoover meanwhile was a sultry 4-for-5 at the dish with four RBI and two runs.

The Savage Storm struck in the back half of the eighth narrowing the WU margin to one as throwing error and wild pitch accounted for two runs before a home run made it 15-14. With the Washburn offense finally silenced Southeastern Oklahoma threaten late in ninth but was unable to convert on a bases loaded opportunity as Zach Linquist secured the Ichabod victory.

Austin Simpson was credited with the win as he tossed two and two-third innings of relief after initially appearing in the sixth. The left-hander surrendered four runs on five hits. Starter Jake Butterfield was received a no-decision as he went two and two-third innings with nine runs on eight hits. Trevor Marreel and Nathan Lorenzen were effective in their relief appearances, while Linquist was awarded his third save of the season.

Jacobson ended the day 3-for-6 with two runs, while Crosby, Hahn, and Reid Greaser each registered a hit and a pair of walks.

The Ichabods wrap-up a five games in five days stretch on tomorrow when they return home to Falley Field and host MIAA rival, Fort Hays State. Originally scheduled for 5 pm, first pitch with the Tigers is now slated for 4 pm.
