Game Recap: Softball |

Ichabods sweep Hawks in true home opener

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn softball team recorded its second series sweep of the week Friday, as the Ichabods took both games of a doubleheader against Rockhurst. Now a perfect 4-0 in home games this season, they will be put to their first MIAA test Saturday, as they take on Central Oklahoma in a doubleheader that starts at noon. Those game will also take place at the Washburn Softball Complex.

Game 1:
The Ichabods got off to an early 2-0 lead, as Samantha Stallbaumer scored on a Savannah Moore single, and Moore reached home plate on a Hawks' throwing error.
Megan Dieter also started the game hot, striking out five of the Hawks' first six batters, and throwing three hitless innings.
In the fourth, the Ichabods gave up two runs, allowing the Hawks to tie. The first run came on a bases-loaded walk, and the tying run came across on a wild pitch. Lexi Crabtree entered the game to pitch with one out in the fourth, and got out of a bases-loaded jam to hold the tie.
The Ichabods came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead. Maddie Anderson's left field single scored Ashley Ruder, and Savannah Moore obtained her second RBI of the game on a single up the middle, which scored Anderson.
In the final three innings, Crabtree faced twelve more batters, giving up just two hits and walking just one. No Hawks runner advanced beyond second, as Crabtree picked up her first win of the season.
Savannah Moore was 3-4 on the game with her team-leading two RBI, while Ruder went 2-3 with a run scored.

Game 2:
In a tight defensive battle, the Ichabods were able to pull out a win with a two-run third inning.
The Ichabods had a much tougher time putting down hits in game two, with just four after 12 in game one. Three of those came in the all-important third inning, when Stallbaumer and Emilee Baker's singles, as well as a double steal, put them in position to score. Amanda Carney's groundout with one out and Stallbaumer on third allowed her to put the first run on the board, and Taylor Kirk's two-out single up the middle gave her an RBI after Baker came in to score.
The Hawks were a threat to score in the first inning, with runners on second and third with just one out, but Kelsee Henry struck out the Hawks' Hanna Stam and popped out Taylor Rupe in foul territory.
After 1-2-3 innings in frames three through six, the Ichabods had a scare in the top of the seventh. After forcing out a runner at third for the first out of the inning, the Ichabods still had trouble putting the Hawks away, as they were able to load the bases with two outs. A lineout to Baker sealed the victory for the Ichabods, and preserved a complete-game shutout win for the 5-2 Henry. She allowed four hits and walked one in her seven innings, striking out three. Stallbaumer was the lone Ichabod with multiple hits, going 2-3 for the game and adding a run scored.
