Team effort sees Baseball swat Hornets in series opener

EMPORIA, Kan. --- In the 231st meeting, the Washburn baseball team put together a complete team effort as seven Ichabods combined for 12 hits, while starter Nick Sloan tossed a complete game gem in a 9-1 victory over Emporia State, Wednesday at Glennen Field. With the result, Washburn improves to 9-19 on the year and 3-14 in MIAA play.

Sloan was magnifigent in his outing as he held the Hornets (15-12, 6-8 MIAA) scoreless through eight and two-thirds en route to collecting the win.

The junior righty dominated early and often as he retired 17 of the first 20 batters faced, including nine straight from the fourth to seven innings, while only seeing two ESU batters advance to second during the first seven innings. Sloan went the distance as he tossed all nine innings, allowing one run against on eight hits with six strikeouts.

Josh Crosby led the Ichabod offense as he went 4-for-5 day at the plate including a double and a home run, while plating a career-best five runs batted-in. Javis Larson accounted for four runs with three scored and one RBI.

Jake Bublitz opened the scoring the scoring in the second with a lead-off home run to left-center for his third of the year. Washburn used the longball again in third as Crosby hammered the offering over the left field fence for a two-run shot, and his eighth home run of the season.

Washburn continued to cruise in the fourth behind a four-run stanza to claim a 7-0 lead. A pair of one out singles saw Jake Hahn and Bailey Jenkins each reach early in the top half of the inning. An ESU pitching change, did little to the Ichabod momentum as Darian Abram's single to right to brought in Hahn. Larson then pushed Jenkins across to make it 5-0, before a Crosby double to left scored two more.

After a scoreless fifth, the Ichabods returned to their scoring ways with two runs in the sixth. Crosby again added to Washburn cause with an RBI single to score Abram who drew a lead-off walk. Larson then accounted for the final Ichabod run of the day as he scored on a fielder's choice by Brady Hoover.

Emporia State eluded the shutout late in the ninth as it capitalized on a wild pitch.

The Ichabods will continue action on the road Thursday as they begin their series with Pittsburg State. First pitch is currently slated for 2 pm.
