EMPORIA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods swept an MIAA doubleheader for the first time over Emporia State since April 23, 2002 winning two games over the Hornets taking game one 4-0 and completing the sweep with a 6-1 win over the Hornets increasing their season-long winning streak to seven games. The Ichabods, who improved to 26-7 and 11-1 in the MIAA with the sweep will face the Hornets again on Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex in a non-conference twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Washburn 4, Emporia State 0
The game was scoreless and hitless for each team until the top of the fourth inning when with two outs,
Savannah Moore recorded a solo home run, her sixth of the season, to put the Ichabods up 1-0.
Washburn added two more in the sixth inning on a sac fly by
Taylor Kirk and then an RBI single by
Brianna Francis put the Ichabods up 3-1. A solo run in the seventh on an RBI single by
Emilee Baker scoring
Samantha Stallbaumer was more than enough run support for
Megan Deiter who moved to 11-0 this season striking out five in the complete game shutout.
Moore and Francis each had two hits for the Ichabods who outhit the Hornets (13-23, 5-9 MIAA) 8 to 4 in the opener.
Game 2 – Washburn 6, Emporia State 1
In the second game,
Brianna Francis started the scoring in the top of the first with a single to RBI scoring both
Emilee Baker and
Samantha Stallbaumer. In the third inning, Washburn sent nine batters to the plate scoring four runs to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Savannah Moore reached on an error which scored both Baker and Stallbaumer and then a sac fly by
Maddie Anderson scored Moore from third. Francis would come around to score on another Hornet error as ESU finished with five errors in the game.
The Hornets added a solo run in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-1, but would not get any closer as the Ichabods completed the sweep.
Stallbaumer and Francis each had three hits to lead the Ichabod 10-hit-parade.
Kelsee Henry lifted her record to 12-3 on the season with four strikeouts scattering six hits and the one run for the Hornets.
