KEARNEY, Neb. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team suffered another loss dropping a 6-3 decision in its series opener to Nebraska-Kearney on a frigid Friday morning in Nebraska.
Due to a winter storm, the first pitch of this series opener was moved up to 9 am. The teams were scheduled for a doubleheader however inclement conditions forced game two to be postponed. The remaining two games will now be played Sunday, however a location and time have yet to be determined.
In spite of the final, Washburn (11-26, 5-21 MIAA) starter
Josh Ramirez (2-2) pitched well in his outing, including a hitless first and fourth innings for UNK hitters before exiting after the sixth. With seven strikeouts, Ramirez surrendered nine hits during his six innings of work with the Lopers scoring once in the second and fifth and pushing two across during the third and sixth.
Reliever
Sam Carver was efficient his two-inning scoreless appearance allowing one hit while fanning four of the seven batters his faced.
Offensively, Washburn sputtered at the plate as
Darian Abram (2-for-3) and
Josh Crosby (2-for-4) each finished with two hits on the day while four others Ichabod notched one hit each and collectively drew a single walk. The Ichabods finished with eight hits but left four runners in scoring position behind.
Crosby extended his team-best games with multi-RBI to nine as he drove in Abram across for the opening run in the first to give WU a 1-0 lead. He then gave the Ichabods their second lead of the morning in third, 2-1, with his second consecutive double to score
Javis Larson (0-for-3) home.
Trailing 3-2, Washburn threatened to regain the lead in the fifth as it placed runners on second and third with one-out but was went away emptyhanded.
In the sixth,
Brady Hoover (1-for-4) trimmed the deficit to 5-3 with hit a solo shot to right for his sixth home run of the season. WU hitters struggled from then on, tallying just one hit in the final 12 at-bats.
