Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. – The Washburn men's tennis team fell short of capturing their first MIAA Tournament Championship Wednesday, losing 5-1 to Southwest Baptist.

In doubles, the Ichabods were unable to gain a decision in their favor. The No. 1 team of Alejandro Valarezo and Blake Hunter fell 9-7 to the Bearcats No. 1 team, despite fighting back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the match at 7-7. The No. 2 team of Raul-Alin Dicu and Tommy Hunter took an 8-4 loss, while the No. 3 team of Chase Brill and Paul Haase went down 8-5 to the Bearcats.

In singles play, the Bearcats grabbed the first decision, as SBU's No. 1 Sherif Abohabaga defeated Valarezo 6-1, 6-1. Chase Brill provided the Ichabods their only victory of the day a No. 6 singles, winning 7-6, 6-2. The deciding match came at No. 5 singles, when Torben Semrau defeated the Ichabods' Bradley Eidenmueller 6-2, 6-3. The three matches left unfinished were all into their third sets.

The Ichabods now sit at 12-5 overall, with a 5-3 record in the Central Region. They will await their placement in the NCAA Regional Tournament, which will be determined Sunday.
