EMPORIA, Kan. --- Despite a late rally in the eighth Washburn baseball fell short Wednesday night dropping the series finale with Emporia State, 8-3. The Ichabods struggles stemmed in part from tying a season-high five errors while being outhit 10-7.
Trailing 5-0 after the seventh,
Javis Larson's (2-for-4) single through the middle allowed
Jake Hahn (0-for-4) to score from second after reaching on an ESU error before
Daniel Reilly (0-for-0) walk allowed him to advance into scoring position. Punch runner
Cole Emerson then trimmed the deficit to 5-2 thanks to a bloop single to right by
Brady Hoover (2-for-4). With Larson at third,
Bowe Behymer (1-for-3) pushed him across to further close the gap as his sacrifice fly made it 5-3.
Emporia State however reclaimed a five-run margin in the bottom half of the eighth as it plated three runs with two unearned to lead 8-3.
Washburn starter
Brock Gilliam was charged with the loss after surrendering five runs, three earned, on six hits while tallying three strikeouts. Gilliam was effective during the first three frames as he held ESU scoreless before ESU scored one in fourth and four in the fifth.Â
The ball was then handed to
Jake Butterfield who worked efficiently in his scoreless two-inning appearance including a three-up, three-down sixth, while
Nathan Lorenzen tossed the eighth.
The Ichabods will close their season at Falley Field with a three-game set against Lindenwood. The series opener is scheduled to begin Friday at 6 pm with the remainder of the series to follow on Saturday and Sunday.Â
