TOPEKA, Kan. --- The end of the 2018 Washburn baseball season came to a bitter end Sunday as the Ichabods stranded seven runners, including four in scoring position, in a 7-4 loss to Lindenwood as it avoids the series sweep.
Â
Trailing 4-0, Washburn's (17-30, 11-25 MIAA) first runs of the came during the third as the Ichabods cut the deficit in half on an RBI double from
Josh Crosby as
Bailey Jenkins and
Javis Larson scored on the play. Jenkins reached base on a single, while Larson was granted a pass to first after getting hit by a pitch. The runs pushed Crosby's season RBI total to 46.
Â
The Ichabods scored twice more in the sixth as
Bowe Behymer crossed home on a
Joel Spain single, while
Jake Bublitz touched home following a wild pitch.
Â
Washburn fell behind early as Lindenwood got to
Tanner Strickbine quickly, as the Ichabod starter surrendered one run on three hits during the first before seeing three more cross home in second. As a result, the lefty's day was cut short after one and two-thirds innings as he surrendered five hits and four walks.
Â
Matthew Hicks was efficient in long relief as he scattered four hits while tossing four and a third innings. Hicks opened his outing by retiring each of the first four Lion hitters he faced before conceding a pair of runs in the fourth. The righty however bounced back by retiring the nine of the next 11 batters he faced.
Â
Braden Larkey and
Zach Linquist then combined to work the final three frames. Appearing in the seventh, Larkey held Lindenwood scoreless while allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Linquist closed out the game with pair of strikeout, while LWU pinned a run in the eighth with three hits.
Â
Offensively, Larson and Jenkins each went 2-for-4, while five Ichabods registered one hit apiece making up the balance of Washburn's nine hits on the day.
