Baseball drops twin bill to Missouri Southern

TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team stranded a combined 17 runners Thursday (Apr. 5) as it dropped its doubleheader with Missouri Southern. Despite out hitting the Lions, 14-10 in game one, the Ichabods (10-23, 4-18) fell 8-6 in 11 innings, before conceding game two 7-5.
 
The third and final game of the series is currently schedule for Saturday, but further details regarding location and time have yet to be determined due to winter-like weather in the forecast for Topeka.
 
Game 1: Mo. Southern 8, Washburn 6 (11 Inn.)
 
Trailing 4-0 after the opening inning and a half, Washburn found itself on the board with an RBI single by Jake Hahn in the bottom half of the second.
 
With back-to-back three-up, three-down inning for starter Josh Ramirez in the third and fourth the Ichabod offense started to click as it scored once in the third before adding two more with the long ball in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. Darian Abram accounted for the run in the third by way of an error. Steven Jacobson launched a two-run blast to center for his first career home run.
 
MSSU pushed ahead 6-4 in the fifth as it scored on back-to-back runs. The score stood until the seventh as Javis Larson scored on a RBI ground out by Brady Hoover trimming the deficit the 6-5.
 
With two outs and two runners on, the Ichabods turned to Bowe Behymer to in the ninth. The senior delivered with a clutch single to left allowing the speedy Joel Spain to score from for the tying run.
 
The Missouri Southern won the opener in the 11th with a two-run home run.
 
Offensively, Abram and Jacobson each finished with three hits, while Behymer, Hahn and Jake Bublitz posted two hits apiece.
 
Reliever Matthew Hicks was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on three hits. Ramirez went five innings with six runs against, five earned, on five hits. Austin Simpson was efficient his four innings of scoreless relief.
 
Game 2: Mo. Southern 7, Washburn 5
 
The WU offense sputtered in game two as it was limited to three hits during the opening four innings. Despite that, the Ichabods pushed two across during that span with a run by Abram in the first, before a wild pitch saw Bublitz score in the fourth, to cut the Lions' lead to 3-2.
 
MSSU however responded in the fifth with a pair of solo home runs pushing the scored to 5-2.
Washburn began to rally in the seventh as Josh Crosby drew a bases loaded walk to score Bailey Jenkins. In the next at-bat, Brady Hoover then registered a fielder's choice RBI as Abram scored to pull the Ichabods within one, 5-4.
 
Jacobson notched the final of the run of the afternoon for WU in the eighth, but it was not enough as MSSU had plated two in the top half of the frame.
 
Washburn starter Nick Sloan was dealt the loss as he went seven innings and surrendered five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Tanner Strickbine and Trevor Marreel each made relief appearances as they split the final two innings.
 
Jacobson posted another three-hit game, while Hahn finished with two hits. Abram was 0-for-2 in game two with three walks.
