Ichabods Fall to No. 12 Greyhounds 5-1, Ending National Tournament Run

5/10/2018 1:55:00 PM

Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Washburn men's tennis season came to an end Thursday in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, as the Ichabods fell to #12 Indianapolis 5-1.

After winning two of three doubles matches in the first round against Lander, the Ichabods were swept in doubles action Thursday. The No. 1 team of Alejandro Valarezo and Blake Hunter fell just short of tying the single-season record in doubles victories, ending the year at 31-5.

Freshman Raul-Alin Dicu picked up the lone singles victory for the Ichabods, winning out of the No. 4 slot and bringing the score to 3-1. The Geryhounds bounced right back, winning out of the No. 2 and No. 5 slots to clinch a spot in the national semifinals. Hunter and Chase Brill left their matches unfinished leading in the second set, while Valarezo was down 5-4 in the second, all looking to come back from losing their first sets.

The Ichabods end their season at 14-6, making their furthest NCAA Tournament run in school history. They will return six players next season, losing senior Blake Hunter, who ends his Ichabod career first in all-time doubles victories and second in all-time singles victories.
