Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Washburn men's tennis team defeated No. 4 Lander 5-3 to advance to its first ever NCAA quarterfinal match.
The No. 7 duo in the nation,
Alejandro Valarezo and
Blake Hunter gave the Ichabods their first match victory out of No. 1 doubles, defeating a fellow top 20 team in Lander's Alexander Regner and David Korsten.
Chase Brill and
Paul Haase gave the Ichabods a 2-1 lead after their 9-8 win out of the No. 3 doubles slot.
Raul-Alin Dicu gave the Ichabods the first singles decision for either side, bringing the Ichabod lead up to 3-1 before the Bearcats were able to tie it at 3-3. Haase's No. 2 singles win brought the Ichabods to a 4-3 lead with only one win left to clinch, which was captured by Valarezo out of the No. 1 singles slot. Valarezo won in straight sets but was taken to seven games each set, winning 7-6, 7-6 over nationally-ranked Eirik Groner.
The Ichabods will take on the No. 12 Indianapolis Greyhounds, the match scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. Central time in the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
