Soccer completes 2-0 shutout victory in season opener

FAYETTE, Iowa -- The Washburn Ichabod Soccer team started off the 2018 season with a resounding victory as it blanked the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 2-0.

The Ichabods outshot the Mustangs by double digits, 21-7, and eight of those 21 shots were on goal.

It was SMSU who made the first scoring attempts, shooting twice in the first 7:25 of the game. Tera Lynch and Ellie Karloff both answered with shots of their own in the ninth minute, but couldn't score. Neither team could get much going until the 30th minute.

The Ichabod offense turned it up a notch with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Tera Lynch got things started and found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to put Washburn up 1-0. In that 15 minute time frame, the squad got off three shots on goal and six total shots.

At the half, Washburn had taken nine shots and three on goal while the defense held Southwest Minnesota to just three shots, two on goal. Sophomore Riley Trent got the starting nod in the net and successfully made both saves.

For the start of the second half, freshman goal keeper Bailee Russell took over duty in the net. It wasn't long before she saw some action, making her first save five minutes into the second half. However, that was the last shot on goal the Mustangs would take.

The Bods offense took over yet again and added another goal in the 68th minute. Freshman midfielder Ryanne Serrone-Brown netted her first collegiate goal and was assisted by Kati Sneegas. WU dominated the possession time and closed out the 2-0 win.

The victory was an all-around team effort as 10 different Ichabod players took at least one shot. Lynch led the team with four shots and two on goal. Serrone-Brown, Karloff, and Mackenzie Heiman all took three shots and one on goal. Josie Rimmer finished with two shots on goal.

The Ichabods will stay in Fayette to face tournament host Upper Iowa on Sat., Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
