TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn Soccer's offense went on a scoring tear in the second half against Fort Hays State and scored three goals in a 12 minute time span to defeat the Tigers 3-1. With the victory, the Ichabods are now 4-3 on the season.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half and matched in shot attempts with four each. The Ichabods were held without a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes while the Tigers took two shots on net, but
Whitney Bockover was able to handle both of them and come up with the save.
The excitement in the second half for Washburn started in the 58th minute.
Mackenzie Heiman powered her way towards the goal and took a shot that found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Just 55 seconds later,
Ellie Karloff had the ball on the right side and was able to draw the Tigers' goalie, Megan Kneefel, out of the box to contest the shot. Karloff got the shot off and watched the ball roll to the back of the empty net to put the Ichabods up 2-0 in the 59th minute. It was the first goal of the season for Karloff.
Washburn's offense wasn't done yet, though.
Tera Lynch extended the lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute after she nailed a shot up the middle for her second goal of the season.
The Ichabods had another scoring opportunity in the 78th minute when the Tigers' new keeper, Deonna Wellbrock, was given a yellow card which set up a penalty kick for Washburn. Karloff took the PK for the Ichabods, but Wellbrock held on for the save.
Fort Hays answered in the 81st minute as Jordan Thompson found the back of the net for the Tigers to cut the lead to 3-1. The Tigers attempted one more shot in the game, but it was high, sealing the victory for Washburn.
Just as the first half, both teams matched totals in shots taken in the second period, this time with eight apiece. The Tigers were limited to one shot on goal while the Ichabods attempted three.
Bockover finished the night in the net with three saves and one goal allowed.
Josie Rimmer led the team with three shot attempts. Karloff and Heiman each took two shots and scored a goal. Lynch scored one goal with one shot attempt.
Washburn will stay at home for Sunday's matchup against Nebraska-Kearney to begin conference play. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
