Efficient attack helps Volleyball ease past Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. --- The No. 13 Washburn volleyball team blistered Pittsburg State on Saturday registering its 12th sweep of the season (25-12, 25-12, 25-15). The Ichabods extended their consecutive win streak 19-straight while staying atop the MIAA standings at 7-0.

Every Ichabod found their way to the stat sheet as Washburn (19-0) dominated the Gorillas on both sides of the net. Offensively, WU held a 38-20 advantage in kills while out hitting PSU, .349 to -.200.

The efficient Ichabod attack surrendered just nine points to errors while taking a season-low 83 swings. Pitt State (15-5, 4-3 MIAA) on the other hand, committed 27 errors including 22 from the attack. The Gorillas however edged out Washburn, 4-3, in service aces.

The Washburn defense posted nine team blocks to Pitt State's three.

With seven Ichabods tallying kills, Allison Maxwell led the way with a match-best 10. Genna Berg added nine to cause. Erica Montgomery and Makayla Maxwell finished with five apiece, while Shayla Conner and Taylor Antonowich chipped in with four each. Conner notched her 12th double-double of the season she registered 28 assists and 11 digs.

Defensively, Faith Rottinghaus accounted for 14 of WU's 54 digs, with the remaining balance distributed over 10 other Ichabods. Makayla Maxwell paced all players with a match-high seven blocks, while Antonowich followed with four.

Erika Ivkov and Marissa Bates each had five kills for Pittsburg State.

Set 1: The Ichabods jumped out a comfortable lead as they opened on a 7-1 run and forced Pittsburg State to burn a timeout early. During the run, Washburn received kills from Antonowich, Berg and Conner. Little momentum as Makayla Maxwell tallied a two kills and assisted blocks before a Conner kill helped Washburn assume a double-figure lead, 16-6. The Ichabods extended the lead to 12, 20-8, before taking a 1-0 match lead with a 25-
12 decision as Allison Maxwell buried three kills and assisted on a blocked to account for four of the WU's final five points.

Set 2: Despite a tie at 4-4, Washburn never trailed in frame, out hitting the Gorillas .450 to .034. The Ichabods grabbed an early lead before Pitt State tallied back-to-back aces forcing the first tie of the day. WU though responded with a four straight points including kills from Antonowich and Allison Maxwell to take an 8-4 lead. Leading 11-6, Washburn sees its margin get pushed to nine as PSU conceded four consecutive points as the result of the errors. Another 4-0 run and the Ichabods stretch their margin to double-digits as Montgomery registered a kill and block helping WU to a 20-7 lead. The frame closes with a 5-5 exchange but its nearly enough for the Gorillas as the Ichabods claim a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 decision.

Set 3: Washburn race out a 7-2 cushion early as Berg and Allison Maxwell each score a pair of kills in the process. The Ichabods then quickly push difference to a 10-point margin as Makayla Maxwell bookends a 4-0 run giving WU a 14-4 lead. Pitt State fought back late trimming the Ichabods margin to seven behind a 4-1 run before any hopes of a rally were quickly put to rest with back-to-back kills by Montgomery pushing the Ichabod lead to 18-9. Makayla Maxwell buried a kill late to make it 24-14 and set-up match-point, which she and Antonowich registered two plays later to complete the sweep.
