Women's Tennis claims doubles title at ITA Regionals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Washburn Women's Tennis duo of Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey were crowned the Flight A doubles champions at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Sunday.

Czapinski and Morrissey advanced to the finals after a default by Augustana. In the final round, the Ichabods faced Central Oklahoma. Washburn claimed the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 2-6. Czapinski and Morrissey came back strong in the third set and won 10-4 to take home the championship title.

Maria Valverde reached the championship match in Singles Flight B in exciting fashion. Valverde won a close first set of the semifinals over Sara Van Eeckoudt of Central Oklahoma, 7-6. Eeckoudt bounced back in set two, winning 7-5. The match was pushed to a third set where Valverde swept the tie breaking set 6-0 to advance to the finals.

In the final, the No. 2 seeded Valverde took on the No. 1 seeded Nikki Boyar of Central Oklahoma. Valverde was unable to defeat the top-seeded player and fell 6-2, 6-4.

Jacqueline Engelbrecht battled it out in the Flight A singles semifinal round and lost a tough three set match against Isabella Dunlap of Central Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.

Competing in Doubles Flight B, Valverde and Kinsey Fields fell in the semifinal round to Harding.

Madison Lysaught won the semifinal round in Singles Flight B back draw, but fell in the consolation final match.

Both Washburn men and women enjoyed success in this weekend's tournament. In addition to winning both the men's and women's doubles championships, the Ichabods boasted a combined six singles players and three doubles teams who returned to play on the final day in both the main and back draws. Those numbers exceeded that of any other school competing on the final day and was also the most in Washburn's program history.
