LUBBOCK, Texas --- The Washburn Ichabod volleyball record remained unblemished after the opening day of the Chaps Classic, as the Ichabods improved to 10-0 following a pair of sweeps against Arkansas-Monticello and host Lubbock Christian. With the results, the Ichabods have now swept eight matches this season, while pushing head coach
Chris Herron's Washburn win total to 481. Washburn will wrap up action Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma before facing defending Heartland Conference tournament champion, St. Mary's (Texas).
The Ichabod offensive out shined their counterparts, as it hit .266 with 91 kills on 241 attempts and 27 errors. In addition, Washburn averaged 15.17 kills per set and registered 13 services. The WU defensive meanwhile saw UAM and LCU hit a combined for .056 with 50 kills, 37 errors, with 10 fewer swings, as they combined for 6.84 fewer kills per set.Â
Individually,
Erica Montgomery finished with a combined team-high 18 kills, while
Genna Berg had 17.
Shayla Conner paced the team with 44 assists and five aces, while chipping with 22 digs.
Faith Rottinghaus held down the backline as she dug up a combined 40 attack attempts.
Makayla Maxwell tallied 11 kills and 10 blocks.
Washburn 3, Ark.-Monticello 0 // 25-11, 25-22, 25-13
In spite of a rocky second set, the Washburn offense looked in fine form as it out hit the Cotton Blossoms, .277 to .031, en routing to tallying its seventh sweep of the season.
Behind a .303 hitting percentage in the first set, the Ichabods cruised past Arkansas-Monticello, 25-11, as Berg led the charge with five kills, with
Taylor Antonowich and
Erica Montgomery chipping in as they combined for five more, as seven Ichabods registered a kill during the opening stanza.Â
Tied at 8-8 in the second set, UAM took its largest lead of the day behind a 7-1 run as it floated out to a 15-9 advantage. The Cotton Blossom margin hovered around five as pushed the score to 19-14.
Kelsey Gordon then sparked a Washburn 4-0 spurt as she notched a kill an block in consecutive succession, cutting the deficit to 19-18. See-saw action kept the UAM cushion at one as sides  advantaged the scoreline to 21-20. The Ichabods however pulled through as Arkansas-Monticello conceded consecutive offensive errors late, allowing WU to close on the set, 25-22, thanks to a 5-1 run.
After hitting .095 in the middle frame, the Washburn offense was far more efficient in the third set as it posted an efficient .459 mark, as it notched 20 kills on 37 swings with just three errors. Montgomery fronted the attack as she buried five of 12 swings finishing with a match-best 12 kills.

In another display of offensive efficiency and dominance the Ichabods sweep their hosts in the Friday finale, as they out hit the Lady Chaps, .256 to .075.
A bumping opening, Washburn trailed early until it managed to string together a 4-1 run, leveling the set at 10-10. LCU regained the lead with back-to-back points, but the advantage quickly evaporated as tallied four unanswered. After another short 3-0 run nudged the Lady Chaps out front, the margin was again short-lived as Washburn exploded with a 10-1 run, including eight-straight, to assume a 24-16 cushion. LCU however did not surrender peacefully, as it sliced the WU lead to three, before its own attack error brought the rally to an abrupt halt with the Ichabods winning the set, 25-21.
After recording six attack errors in the first set, the Ichabod offense found its rhythm early in the second with a 9-2 lead and never looked back, eventually overpowering the Lady Chaps 25-11. WU featured a balanced attack with eight different Ichabods notching a kill, as its hitting percentage improved from .180 in the first to .303 in the second. Meanwhile, the Ichabod defense held LCU to sub-.100 hitting for the second consecutive and forced into a match-high nine attack errors.
Behind a .304 hitting mark, the Washburn momentum continued into the third as it opened with an 8-3 advantage as
Makayla Maxwell notched a pair of kills during the run. Trailing 15-11, LCU erased the WU cushion and knotted the score at 16-all, thanks in part to a 5-1 run. Undaunted, the Ichabods rattled off a 9-2 run, putting the match out of reach late to secure a a 25-18 decision and another sweep. Â
