Scouting the RiverHawks
Northeastern State was picked seventh in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing the 2018 season 10-7-2 overall and 4-5-2 in conference play. The RiverHawks are currently 6-3-1 overall and are 1-2-0 in conference matches.Â
The RiverHawks lost two conference matches to defending MIAA champion, Central Oklahoma, and Central Missouri. Northeastern State lost both matches with a score of 1-3. The team claimed their first conference win over Missouri Southern winning 2-1.Â
Senior midfielder, Mariah Nicolet, leads the RiverHawks with 13 points from six goals and one assist so far this season. Nicolet was the leading scorer for Northeastern State in 2018 with nine goals, four of which were the game winning goal. Paulina Chavez was the second leading scorer last season and is behind Nicolet in points with three goals and one assist to total seven points.Â
The RiverHawks' defense is led by senior, Emily Seiler, who has start the in nine games so far this season. Seiler was a member of the 2018 all-MIAA second tem and all-Region honors from United Soccer Coaches. The RiverHawks have played two goalkeepers this season, junior Brennan Hocket and freshman Ainsley Cunningham. Hocket has a current save percentage of .700 after saving 21 if the 76 shots she faced. Cunningham has .706 percentage after saving 12 of the 37 shots she faced while in goal. Â
Scouting the Hillcats
This is Rogers States' first year in the MIAA, after being in the Heartland Conference for six seasons. The Hillcats were picked sixth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing the 2018 season 10-6-2 overall and 7-5-2 in the Heartland Conference under their new head coach, Yolanda Thomas. The Hillcats are currently 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAA conference.
RSU has played Newman, Missouri Southern and Central Missouri so far in conference matches. The Hillcats fell to Newman, 0-1 and blew past Missouri Southern, 2-0. The team went to double-overtime with Central Missouri ending in a score of 0-0. The Hillcats will face Emporia State on Fri., Oct. 11 before matching up with Washburn on Oct. 13.
The team will return top-scorer, Hannah Mushisky, who scored eight goals. Mushisky was an all-Heartland conference member and a United Soccer Coaches all-Region selection. So far this season she has tallied three goals. Laurelle Theodore currently leads the team with three goals and two assists so far this season.Â
Junior defender, Alex Wynn, leads the Hillcat defense. ReVella Fisher is the returning to defend the net for the Hillcats this season. She currently has a save percentage of .827 saving 62 of the 152 shots she has faced so far this season. Fisher currently leads the MIAA in shutouts with five so far this season.
