No. 5 Volleyball wins fourth-straight match with sweep at Central Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. -- The No. 5 Washburn volleyball team rolled to its fourth-consecutive win and 11th shutout of the season with a 3-0 road victory against Central Oklahoma Saturday evening. The Ichabods are now 13-1 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play while the Bronchos fall to 12-5, 4-3 MIAA.

Washburn scored the first three points of the match and never trailed in the opening set. The Ichabods hit .326 in the 25-16 set victory and registered 18 kills between five different players, with Erica Montgomery responsible for six of those kills.

The second set was a close back-and-forth scoring affair as there were 14 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points until Washburn put together a 5-0 scoring run to take a 21-16 lead. The Ichabod scoring run included two service aces by Taylor Antonowich, a kill by Montgomery, and two errors committed by the Bronchos. The teams continued to exchange points, but Washburn's scoring run helped secure the 25-20 set win.

Central Oklahoma came out aggressive in the third set and quickly had a 7-3 lead over Washburn. Back-to-back kills by Kelsey Gordon cut the Bronchos' lead to 7-5 and then she started a crucial 8-0 scoring rally to put the Ichabods on top 14-9. Central Oklahoma got within four points at 19-15, but that would be as close as the Bronchos would get for the remainder of the set as Washburn won 25-18 and completed the sweep.

The Ichabods finished the match with a .264 attacking percentage while holding the Bronchos under .100 in every set to finish with a .091 average.

Berg recorded her second-straight double-double and fifth of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs. Maxwell and Gordon each chipped in 10 kills and both hit over the .300 mark as Maxwell finished with a .304 attacking percentage and Gordon hit .348 in the match. Maxwell led the team in blocks with four total, including one solo block. Allison Sadler was one dig shy of adding another double-double of her own as she recorded 38 assists and nine digs. Defensive specialist Faith Rottinghaus led the team with 13 digs.

Washburn will stay on the road for another two matches next weekend as the Ichabods travel to Missouri Southern on Oct. 11 and then Pittsburg State the following day on Oct. 12.
