TOPEKA, Kan. -- Junior outside hitter
Genna Berg recorded her 1,000th career kill on Saturday afternoon as the fourth-ranked Washburn volleyball team won its seventh-straight match and 16th shutout of the season with a 3-0 decision over the Newman Jets. The Ichabods are now 22-2 (14-2 MIAA) while the Jets drop to 1-25 (1-16 MIAA).
Washburn completed the sweep by the set scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-21. The Ichabods finished with a .250 attacking percentage and held the Jets to just .055. Washburn also led in kills, 37-27, and in digs, 53-48.
After Washburn won the opening point, Newman landed a kill and back-to-back blocks to take an early 3-1 advantage. Washburn answered with an 8-1 run to take a 9-4 lead and would not trail again. The Ichabods benefited from four errors by the Jets in the midst of a six point burst to take an 18-9 lead.
Halle Meister knocked down a kill to finish out the 25-15 first set victory.
The second set started out with back and forth scoring with three ties until Washburn broke away from the 6-6 tie and went on a 13-2 scoring run to go up by double-digits at 19-8. Holding a 20-10 lead, the Ichabods won the final five points with three kills by three different Ichabods and two service aces by
Madison Johnson. Washburn hit .385 in the frame while Newman had seven kills with seven errors for a .000 hitting percentage.
The Ichabods rattled off the first three points in the third set, but the Jets answered with three of their own to tie the score. Washburn took the lead again after a Newman error and then had two blocks and a kill from Berg to extend its lead to 7-3. Newman stayed close in the match and trailed by two or three points for the majority of the set until the Ichabods won two points on errors and
Taylor Antonowich landed an ace, making the score 19-13. The Jets had a couple of two point scoring runs to chip away at the lead, but a kill from
Erica Montgomery sealed the match victory, 25-21.
Berg became the 21st player in Washburn's history to reach the 1,000 kills milestone and the first to do so since
Sarah Vicory in 2016. Berg finished the match with a team-best 12 kills, hitting .478, and added 11 digs to complete her 11th double-double of the season.
Allison Maxwell contributed eight kills and was a part of five assisted blocks.
Allison Sadler dished out 22 assists and
Faith Rottinghaus led in digs with 20.
Washburn will play its final two home matches of the season next week as it hosts Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. The Ichabods will face the Gorillas Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. and senior
Erica Montgomery will be recognized before the match against the Lions on Saturday, Nov. 9, which will also begin at 6 p.m.
