Ichabods off to the Sunshine State for a pair of games in Fort Lauderdale

OPENING TIP
> The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up the non-conference slate as they will head for Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the Cruzin' Classic Dec. 18-19.
> The Ichabods will face a pair of Sunshine State Conference foes in Tampa in the opener and Palm Beach Atlantic on the second day.
> Washburn is 5-4 this season and 1-1 in the MIAA after topping Kansas Christian on Dec. 14 in a 103-51 win.
> Tampa is 3-8 this season after topping Florida Memorial on Dec. 16 at home 64-53.
> Palm Beach Atlantic is 7-3 after beating Johnson (Fla.) 93-54.
> The Ichabods were tabbed third in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Preseason Media Polls for the second year in a row which were released on Oct. 9 at the MIAA Basketball Media Day in Kansas City.
 
ICHABOD NOTES
> Tyler Geiman leads the Ichabods in scoring at 14.8 ppg as well as assists (6.0) and minutes (35.8) and he is fourth in rebounds (5.6).
> Geiman was named the MIAA player of the Week on Dec. 16 after he had 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in the game. It was Geiman's fourth double double of his career and his third this season just coming up a rebound short of the first triple double in program history.
> Geiman needs one more 3-pointer to reach 100 for his career …he is 15th on the all-time 3-point chart and he needs nine assists to reach 300 for his career …he is seventh on the all-time Ichabod assist chart.
> Jalen Lewis is scoring 12.7 ppg and Drew Maschoff and Jonny Clausing are each scoring 10.3 ppg. Clausing leads the team in rebounding at 9.0 per game.
> Jonny Clausing leads the team in blocks at 2.6 per game which is also seventh in the latest national rankings.
> Tyler Nelson is the Ichabods' leading scorer off the bench at 6.2 ppg scoring.
> Jace Williams tied a career-high with 10 points against Kansas Christian.
> The Ichabods are currently 12th in the MIAA in field goal percentage at .438 (259 of 592) and they ranked second in field goal defense at .400 (213 of 532).
> Tyler Geiman is third in the MIAA in assists (6.0 apg) and is second in minutes per game at 35.8.
> Shannon Cordes had a career-high six points against Kansas Christian.
> The 11 points scored by Connor Deffebaugh against the Falcons was a career high as were his five assists.
> Drew Maschoff tied a career high with nine rebounds against the Falcons.
> The Ichabods' 16 3-pointers was third on the single game chart and the 41 3-point attempts snapped the previous mark of 40 attempted earlier this season against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
 
COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
>  is 51-22 in his third season as the Ichabods' head coach and 84-52 overall in his fifth year as a head coach.
>  has led the Ichabods to two NCAA postseason appearances in both seasons at Washburn.
>  was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
>  he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
>  while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
>  before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.
>  prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.
>  he played two years for the Jayhawks under head coach Roy Williams from 2000-02 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan. In his two seasons as a Jayhawk, the team reached the 2001 NCAA Sweet Sixteen and appeared in the 2002 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods scored the first 16 points of the game leading by as many as 52 rolling to a 103-51 win over Kansas Christian on Saturday in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods hit 4 of their first 5 shots including all five free throws and 3 of 4 3-pointers in the first 2:26 of the game building the 16-0 lead. With Washburn (5-4) leading 24-12, the Ichabods ripped off a 14-3 run over the next 4:09 pushing the lead to 38-15 with over seven minutes to play in the first half before finishing the half on a 17-7 burst stretching the halftime lead to 55-24 entering the break after shooting 21 of 42 from the field while holding the Falcons (7-4) to 9 of 31 shooing and 3 of 10 from deep.
Washburn outscored the Falcons 20-6 over the first eight minutes of the second half en route to the 52-point win improving to 73-5 all-time in games when scoring at least 100 points.
Jalen Lewis led five Ichabod scorers in double figures with 23 points hitting 6 of 11 3-pointers in the game. Tyler Geiman had 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds in the game. It was Geiman's fourth double double of his career and his third this season just coming up a rebound short of the first triple double in program history. Jonny Clausing had 11 points as did Connor Deffebaugh off the bench and Jace Williams scored 10 points.
Washburn broke a school record attempting 41 3-pointers in the game connecting on a season-high 16 which was two shy of the Ichabod record. Overall Washburn shot 53 percent from the field hitting 39 of 74 shots limiting the Falcons to 18 of 58 shooting. Washburn also held a 49 to 29 advantage on the glass and forced 18 turnovers leading to 30 Ichabod points.
Sven Muchow led the Falcons with 13 points.
 
ABOUT TAMPA
> The Spartans are 3-8 this season coming off a 63-54 win overFlorida Memorial on Dec. 16.
