CONROE, Texas – The Washburn Ichabods fell in their opening games of the season at the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational falling 9-2 to West Texas A&M and Texas Woman's 4-3. The Ichabods will return to the diamond on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against No. 9-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-International at 3:30 p.m.
Game 1 – West Texas A&M 9, Washburn 2
The Washburn Ichabods stranded nine base runners falling 9-2 in the 2019 season opener. After the Lady Bluffs scored solo runs in the first and second innings, the Ichabods came back to tie the score on a 2-run homer by
Taylor Kirk scoring
Bri Francis who led off the bottom of the frame with a single.
Washburn left the bases juiced in the third and two on in the fifth inning while West Texas scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth and then busted the game open with a five-spot in the seventh leading to the win.
Samantha Stallbaumer had a triple and
Emilee Baker recorded a double while
Savannah Moore, Francis, Winter Henry and
Ashley Ruder each had singles for the Ichabods. Raegen Hamm took the loss coming in the game in relief of starter
Megan Deiter. Hamm (0-1) struck out six giving up two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Game 2 – Texas Woman's 4, Washburn 3
Three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth spelled disaster for the Ichabods as Washburn fell 4-3 to the Pioneers.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a 2-RBI single by
Savannah Moore scoring
Halle England who walked to lead off the inning followed by a single
Samantha Stallbaumer's bat.
However after the Pioneers scored one in the bottom of the fifth, Texas Woman's scored three unearned runs moving in front of the Ichabods 4-2. Washburn cut the lead to one at 4-3 in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by
Emilee Baker, but left the tying run at third.
Stallbaumer had two hits for the Ichabods and a stolen base and Moore had the 2 RBI.
Megan Deiter allowed one earned run in 4 1/3 innings striking out four with no walks.
