JOPLIN, Mo. --- Washburn baseball suffered a tough luck loss on Sunday as it dropped the series finale to Missouri Southern, 3-2.
It was a pitchers' dual early, it was scoreless through the opening five frames as the arms combined for two hits allowed and a walk during the stretch. Ichabod starter
Brock Gilliam was solid early not allowing a Missouri Southern runner past first during the opening four innings as he retired 11 of the first 14 batters faced.
In the sixth, Washburn drew first blood scratching two across.
Kolton Meyer reached on a lead of single before
Xavier De Leon reached on a Lions' fielding error. The Ichabods were then about capitalize on another Missouri Southern gaffe as a throwing error allowed Meyer and De Leon to touch home.
The Ichabod bats though struggled in the final three frames as Missouri Southern tied it in seventh before scoring once in the ninth.
Gilliam finished with the no decision, throwing 6 1/3 innings with two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Nathan Lorenzen was dealt the loss as he worked 1 2/3 innings, surrendering one run on three hits.
The Ichabods are schedule to return to action Tuesday, March 12 as they host Oklahoma Christian in home opener at Falley Field. First pitch is slated for 5 pm.
