TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 24-ranked Washburn women's tennis team collected their 10th win of the season Friday afternoon with a 5-2 decision over Harding (9-2). The Ichabods claimed the doubles point and carried their momentum into singles action where they won at the first four positions in the lineup. With the win, Washburn extends its winning streak to five matches and improves its record to 10-1 overall.
Washburn grabbed an early 1-0 lead with doubles victories by No. 2 and 3.
Jacqueline Engelbrecht and
Svea Crohn topped their opponent 6-2 and improved their record to 7-3 at the second slot while
Kinsey Fields and Maria Soler Valverde won 6-4 and remain undefeated at No. 3.
In singles competition, the Ichabods stayed strong and posted four victories down the order to secure the team win.
Logan Morrissey got things started for the Ichabods at No. 3 as she won 6-3, 6-3 for her 50th career singles victory.
Alexis Czapinski improved to a perfect 11-0 at the No. 2 slot with her 6-3, 6-2 victory. She is now 15-2 overall in singles action. Soler Valverde rolled to a quick 6-2, 6-1 decision to clinch the team victory at No. 4. Rounding out the scoring for Washburn at the top of the order, Engelbrecht rallied back to win a three set thriller 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 for her 50th career singles victory.
The Ichabods will travel to Maryville, Mo., next week to face the Northwest Missouri Bearcats on Tuesday, March 19. First serve is scheduled at 2 p.m.
