HAYS, Kan. --- Washburn baseball (18-17, 11-13 MIAA) led wire-to-wire in the series finale with Fort Hays State (3-31, 2-22 MIAA), collecting a season-best fifth-straight win with a 13-2 victory at Larks Park. Sunday's result was the Ichabods' first series sweep since taking three against Northeastern State in 2017 and was the first road series sweep since 2016 when they visited Lincoln.
Washburn starter
Brock Gilliam had a quality outing and was credited with the victory, improving to 3-5 on year. Gilliam surrendered a run in the first but then settled in holding the Tigers scoreless over the next four frames. He finished the day scattering five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Relievers
Bailey Jenkins (1.0 IP),
Jared Sharp (1.0 IP), and
Jack Weller (1.0) IP were scoreless in their appearances while
Trevor Marreel conceded a during the seventh as the platoon of replacement arms combined to surrender five hits.
Offensively, Washburn out hit Fort Hays State, 17-10, including five extra base knocks and finished with three steals. As a result, the Ichabods were able to maintain a steady stream of scoring as they pushed two across in the first, seventh, eighth and ninth with one in the sixth, while putting together a four-run second.
At the plate,
Peter Shearer,
Michael Oyervides and
Lane Harvey led the way with three hits each. Shearer was 3-for-5, while Oyervides and Harvey each finished 3-for-4 with two walks.
Also notching multi-hit performances was
Rorey Combs (2-4) and
Steven Jacobson (2-3). Combs, Shearer, Oyervides, Harvey and
Brady Hoover were likewise part of a quintet to post two RBI each.
Washburn built a comfortable 6-1 advantage after two innings.
Xavier De Leon scored twice with Hoover driving him in during each frame. Combs also crossed home during the first and second with consecutive RBI singles from Shearer, while Harvey scored in the second on a double from Combs.
Scoreless over the next three innings, the Ichabod bats picked where they left off in the sixth as Oyervides tripled to center easily allowing Shearer to touch home after reaching on a two-out double.
In the seventh,
Javis Larson and
Steven Jacobson became the fifth and sixth different Ichabods to score, extending the Washburn margin to 9-1, as both were pushed across as the result of back-to-back bases loaded walks.
Oyervides then tallied a pair of runs as he was driven in by
Mitchell Lady in the eighth and
Braden Kirkpatrick during the ninth. Harvey meanwhile finished the day with consecutive RBI as he brought Larson home in the eighth and capped the scoring with Kirkpatrick in the ninth.
Having won six of their last seven contests, the Ichabods are scheduled to return to Falley Field for a four-game homestand. Washburn is set to begin the week with non-conference action against Northwest Missouri on Tuesday before hosting a three-game MIAA weekend series with Emporia State.
