No. 5 Washburn caps off regular season with 4-0 victory

DURANT, Okla. -- The Washburn women's tennis team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon with their seventh shutout victory of the season with a 4-0 win at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Ichabods will head to the MIAA Tournament next week as the top seed with an overall record of 21-2.

The loss drops Southeastern Oklahoma State to 2-10 on the season. For Washburn, 21 wins in the regular season has only occurred one other time in program history. The 2000-01 Washburn women's tennis team also completed the regular season with a record of 21-2.

Washburn clinched the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories from courts No. 1 and 3. The second-ranked duo of Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey recorded the first win of the day and improved their spring record at No. 1 doubles to 19-4. Maria Soler Valverde and Kinsey Fields also added to their win total and sealed sealed the early 1-0 lead. The No. 2 match went unfinished, but Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Svea Crohn led 5-2 when Washburn clinched.

The Ichabods kept rolling once in singles action and won the first three matches to clinch the dual. Morrissey dominated at the No. 3 slot with a 6-0, 6-2 decision. Soler Valverde won her 18th-straight completed singles match, this time at court No. 2. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Crohn clinched the team victory at the No. 5 position as she blanked her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The remaining three singles matches were unfinished after the Ichabods clinched.

The Ichabods turn their attention now to the post season as they are the No. 1 seed in the MIAA Tournament. Washburn will take on the eight seed Missouri Western on Friday, April 26 at 9 a.m. in Oklahoma City, Okla.
