OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 37 Washburn men's tennis team was unable to complete an upset over the tournament's top-seed and 11th-ranked Southwest Baptist Bearcats, falling 4-1 in the MIAA Tournament championship match Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods now hold a record of 14-7 and await their postseason fate as the NCAA will announce the teams advancing to the regional tournaments on May 7.

The Bearcats won the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. The No. 1 doubles match between fifth-ranked Alejandro Valarezo Plaza/Paul Haase and 21st-ranked Raul Caballero/Adham Gaber was knotted at 5-5 when SBU clinched and went unfinished.

Southwest Baptist carried its momentum into the singles competition and won the first two matches to take a 3-0 lead. Marc Roura Casi provided the Ichabods with their only victory of the day at No. 5 singles, defeating his opponent 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). The deciding match came at the No. 3 slot, where the Bearcats claimed a three set victory and clinched the dual. The two remaining matches were neck and neck, but were unfinished.

Southwest Baptist captured its second-straight MIAA Tournament title and improve its record to 17-2.

Washburn is currently ranked fourth in the Central Region and are 7-5 this season against regional opponents. The top-four ranked teams in the Central Region will compete at the regional tournament.
