TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod baseball team fell behind 1-0 after Southwest Baptist's first at bat but then scored 17 unanswered runs scoring in every inning in a 17-1 win over the Bearcats in game three of the series to take the weekend set 2-1. Washburn will be back in action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a single game against Missouri Southern at Falley Field.
After the Bearcats (12-21, 6-15 MIAA) opened the final game of the series with a solo run in the top of the first, the Ichabods came back with a solo run of their own in the bottom of the frame after
Xavier De Leon led off the game and the after a sac bunt came around to score on a single up the middle by
Brady Hoover.
In the second, Washburn added two runs as
Wyatt Featherston led off the inning with a walk and then moved to third after a throwing error on a pick-off attempt would score on a single by
Javis Larson. Larson would score on a single by De Leon staking the Ichabods to a 3-1 lead.
Washburn (14-17, 8-13 MIAA) added three more in the third taking advantage of another Bearcat error as
Peter Shearer doubled and then scored on a single by Featherston. With a double to left center after a Bearcat pitching change,
Lane Harvey drove in Featherston and Larson who reached on an error as Washburn took a 6-0 lead.
The Ichabods scored two more runs in the fourth when Featherston drew a bases-loaded walk after back to back singles by
Steven Jacobson and Hoover followed by a free pass to
Michael Oyervides which led to another bullpen call by the Bearcats. Larson drove in one with a ground out stretching the Ichabod margin to 8-0.
The runs kept coming in the fifth with a solo run on an RBI single by Oyervides sending De Leon home who led off the inning with a single leading to an eight-run sixth inning blowing the game open leading to the run-rule victory. In the sixth, Washburn sent 13 batters to the plate as SBU used three pitchers in the inning en route to using seven in the game.
Featherston led off the inning with a single and after a double by
Mitchell Lady, Harvey connected on a single driving in his third run of the day. A single by
Jake Hahn loaded the bases for
Chance Ragsdale who smashed a pinch-hit three-run blast to left field for his first home run of the season.
Daniel Reilly drew a walk and
Braden Kirkpatrick reached on an error scoring
Mark Wanner who doubled who was running on contact.
Rorey Combs entered as a pinch hitter and had a double to center and moved to third on a fielding error scoring both Kirkpatrick and Wanner.
That was all the run support starter
Brock Gilliam would need as he improved to 2-5 on the season tossing six innings striking out four scattering five hits with three of those coming in the first inning. At one point he retired nine straight and 13 of 15 picking up the win.
De Leon and Harvey finished with three hits while Featherston and Jarson each scored three times with two hits. Ragsdale had 3 RBI as did Harvey leading the Ichabods.
