FIRST SERVE …
- The Washburn women's tennis team will play its first home match of the season this Saturday, Feb. 22 against McKendree. The contest will be held indoors at the Genesis Tennis Center in Topeka and is set to begin at 4 p.m.
- The Ichabods are 1-1 to start the season while McKendree, 0-4, is looking for its first win.
LAST WEEK …
- The Ichabods went 1-1 last week with a 4-3 win over Cameron and 7-0 loss at Drury.
- Against the Aggies, Washburn was swept in the doubles competition to fall behind 0-1.
- Svea Crohn won the first point for Washburn at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
- Cameron went up 2-1 with a three set win at the No. 3 spot.
- At the top of the order, Maria Soler Valverde won the first set 7-6, but fell in the second 1-6, before rallying in the third to win 6-2 to even the score again.
- Cameron won in straight-sets at No. 4 and needed just one more victory to claim the dual win.
- At No. 5 singles, Madison Lysaught turned in a quick 6-2, 6-1 decision to make the score 3-3.
- It all came down to Kinsey Fields, who came away with a pair of 6-2 scores to clinch the Ichabod victory.
- The following day, No. 20 Washburn was shut out against Drury.
- Washburn's lone win of the day came at No. 1 doubles as Logan Morrissey and Crohn claimed a 6-3 victory.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION ...
McKendree Bearcats
- The McKendree Bearcats went 2-14 overall last season and finished 0-5 in GLVC matches.
- The team is looking for their first win of the season after losing three close 4-3 matches so far this season.
- They are scheduled to play at Rockhurst on Saturday morning before traveling to Topeka.
- Bailee Wilson is 3-1 in singles this season and has played at Nos. 1, 2, and 3.
- She is also 3-1 in doubles play with two different partners.
- Sarah Kalkenova is 3-1 in singles so far this spring.
- Todd Tucker is in his first full year as the head coach at McKendree.
- Washburn has faced McKendree three times and has won all three matches.
- The Ichabods have given up just one point over the course of those three matches.
ICHABODS IN THE RANKINGS …
- Washburn is receiving votes in the most recent ITA National top-25 poll, which was released Feb. 19.
- In the 2020 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ichabods landed in a tie for third.
- The doubles team of Morrissey/Crohn are No. 22 in the latest national rankings (Nov. 20) and are second in the Central Region.
- Three Ichabods are ranked in the top-15 of singles in the Central Region.
- Soler Valverde checked in at seventh while Morrissey landed in ninth.
- Crohn rounded out the top-15.
BODS AND ENDS …
- Last season, Washburn went 5-1 when playing indoors in Topeka.
- Their only match at the Genesis Tennis Center last year was a quick 7-0 victory over Central College.
- Overall last spring, the Ichabods went 8-2 in home contests.
- With her doubles win against Cameron, Morrissey moved into a tie for the third-most career doubles wins in Washburn's program history.
- She currently has 77 wins. With her next victory, she will be in a three-way tie for second.
- Marissa Moment is Washburn's all-time career leader in doubles with 81 wins.
INTERIM HEAD COACH DAVID PRICE …
- David Price was appointed the interim head coach for the 2020 spring season on January 22, 2020.
- Price has been in his second stint as an assistant coach for the Washburn tennis programs for past three seasons. He also previously served as an assistant under head coach Peg Marmet.
- He brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program.
- He was an Ichabod himself as he played for Washburn from 1988-92 where he played the No. 1 singles and doubles position.
- Price earned the NAIA singles and doubles champion titles at the No. 1 position his freshman year as well as winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles as a senior.
TAKE A LOOK AHEAD …
- Washburn will compete next at the inaugural ITA DII National Team Indoor Championships in Edmond, Okla., starting at noon on Feb. 28 against No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA National Champions Barry.
