ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Washburn ran into a second half hot-shooting Missouri Western Griffon squad as the Ichabods fell 94-80 in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. Washburn finishes the regular season at 16-12 and will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAA tournament and face the same Griffon team on Friday night in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium at 6 p.m.
The Ichabods trailed at the half 36-35, but the Griffons used a 21-8 jumpstart over the first six minutes of the frame taking a 57-43 lead as Missouri Western hit 8 of 12 shots including 4 of 6 shots from deep while the Ichabods wee 4 of 11 during the same stretch. The Ichabods trailed by as many as 20 on two separate occasions before cutting the lead back to 14 to end the game.
Washburn had a 15-7 lead just under five minutes into the game but the Ichabods were outscored by the Griffons 21-11 over the next 10:26 going hitting 4 of 9 3-pointers taking the lead for good at 28-26.
Tyler Geiman led the Ichabods with 22 points tying for the team lead with six rebounds.
Jalen Lewis scored 18 and
Jonny Clausing scored 15 with six rebounds and two blocks and a team-high three assists.
Tyler Nelson scored 13 and
Connor Deffebaugh had 10 each off the bench.
Missouri Western scored 20 points off Washburn's 13 turnovers and outrebounded the Ichabods 36-33. The Griffons hit 16 of 29 3-point attempts as Tyus Millhollin hit 10 of 15 tries scoring a game-high 34 points.
Washburn finished 30 of 58 from the field while the Griffons were 33 of 65 shooting 59 percent in the second half.
The Ichabods are the No. 5 seed after having a head-to-head win over Northeastern State earlier this season in the only meeting on Feb. 13 in Tahlequah.
