FIRST SERVE …
- The Washburn Ichabods open the 2020 spring season on the road for a pair of matches held in Springfield, Mo., at the Cooper Tennis Complex this weekend.
- The Ichabods take on the Cameron Aggies on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
- The following day, the Ichabods will face Drury at 10 a.m.
FALL SEASON RECAP …
- The Ichabods competed at the Midwestern State Invitational and the ITA Regional Championships in the fall season.
- Senior Madison Lysaught wrapped up a stellar fall season with a singles record of 8-0 and won the singles B Main Draw at the ITA Central Region Championships.
- Svea Crohn went 5-1 in singles action and competed in the Round of 16 of the A Main Draw at the ITA Regional Championships.
- She and doubles partner Logan Morrissey went 6-1 and advanced to the A Main Draw championship match at Regionals.
- In singles, Morrissey finished the fall with a 5-2 record and competed in the ITA Central Region quarterfinals of the A Main Bracket.
- Similar to Morrissey, Soler Valverde also went 5-2 in singles and reached the main bracket quarterfinals at Regionals.
- Kinsey Fields concluded the fall with a 2-3 record in singles.
NEW FACES …
- The team welcomed three freshmen for the 2019-20 season.
- Sydnee Foster joins the Ichabods from Hutchinson, Kan. In her first action with Washburn this past fall, she finished with a singles record of 5-3 and had a doubles record of 1-1 with her partner, Maria Soler Valverde.
- Cadence Lynn of Olathe, Kan., finished the fall season with a singles record of 2-4 and had a doubles record of 0-2 with teammate Madison Lysaught. Lynn competed in the semifinals of the B main draw bracket at Midwestern State Invitational.
- Madeline Lysaught rounds out the three Kansas newcomers. She did not compete in any fall matches.
ICHABODS IN THE RANKINGS …
- Washburn starts the season ranked tied for 20th in the ITA national poll.
- In the 2020 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ichabods landed in a tie for third.
- The doubles team of Morrissey/Crohn are No. 22 in the latest national rankings and are second in the Central Region.
- Three Ichabods are ranked in the top-15 of singles in the Central Region.
- Soler Valverde checked in at seventh while Morrissey landed in ninth.
- Crohn rounded out the top-15.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION ...
Cameron Aggies
- Last season, the Aggies finished the season 9-14 and went 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
- Cameron returns just three players from last season's squad and welcome three newcomers.
- Currently, the tandem of Alisa Savina and Vasilisa Polunova rank 10th in the South Central Region.
- Josh Cobble is in his third full season leading the Aggies. Prior to joining Cameron, he was the head coach at Cowley College for seven years.
- Cameron leads the all-time series, 10-2.
- Washburn swept then-ranked No. 22 Cameron last year in the first match of the 2019 season.
Drury Panthers
- The Drury Panthers reached the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional II championship before ultimately falling to No. 6-ranked Indianapolis in straight sets.
- DU finished the season wih a record of 15-5 and an undefeated 6-0 in GLVC matches.
- To start the 2020 spring season, Yu-Ning Lee (seventh) and Viktoriya Zheleva (ninth) are ranked in the top-10 in the Midwest Region.
- Lee, alongside Alma Abazi, are ranked ninth in the region for doubles.
- Jarrod Smith will enter his 15th year as head coach of the Drury women's tennis team in 2020.
- Washburn trails, 9-4, in the all-time series.
- The Ichabods came out on top in a 4-3 match against the Panthers in Springfield, Mo., last season.
INTERIM HEAD COACH DAVID PRICE …
- David Price was appointed the interim head coach for the 2020 spring season on January 22, 2020.
- Price has been in his second stint as an assistant coach for the Washburn tennis programs for past three seasons. He also previously served as an assistant under head coach Peg Marmet.
- He brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program.
- He was an Ichabod himself as he played for Washburn from 1988-92 where he played the No. 1 singles and doubles position.
- Price earned the NAIA singles and doubles champion titles at the No. 1 position his freshman year as well as winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles as a senior.

- Washburn will compete next at the inagural ITA DII National Team Indoor Championships in Edmond, Okla., Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
