FIRST SERVE …
- The Ichabods will play host to the Bethel Threshers (0-5) on Tuesday, March 3 at the Washburn Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
- The Ichabods are coming off a 6-1 win over McKendree and are now 1-2 to start the season.
LAST WEEK …
- The Ichabods captured their first win of the season in their home opener against McKendree on Feb. 23.
- Washburn took two out of three matches in the doubles competition to go up 1-0.
- Paul Haase and Chase Brill posted a 6-1 win on court one and the tandem of Raul-Alin Dicu/Bradley Eidenmueller clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 decision at the No. 2 spot.
- Eidenmueller started off singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot.
- Dicu followed that up with a 6-4, 7-5 decision on court two.
- At No. 5, Brill defeated his opponent with a pair of 6-2 set scores.
- Miquel Perez lost the first set at No. 4 singles, but came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-4, for his first victory as an Ichabod.
- Haase grinded out a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (9) victory at the top of the order to round out the scoring for Washburn.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION ...
Bethel Threshers
- The Bethel Threshers are looking for their first win of the season as they are currently 0-5
- They closed out the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 6-8 while going 5-4 in KCAC matches.
- The team returns four players and welcomes three incoming freshmen to the squad.
- One of the returners is Nolan Schrader, who received All-KCAC honorable mention accolades as a freshman last season going 14-12 at No. 1 doubles and recorded seven wins at No. 1 singles.
- Former Bethel tennis player Gabe Johnson is in his first season in a new role with the team as he was named the program's head coach in October.
- Washburn is 16-3 all-time against Bethel and has won the last 12-straight meetings.
- The last time these two teams met was on Sept. 25, 2000. The Ichabods came away with a 9-0 shutout.
ICHABODS IN THE RANKINGS …
- The Ichabods were picked second in North Division of the 2020 MIAA-GAC Coaches Preseason Poll.
- Washburn will start the season ranked sixth in the Central Region.
- Individually, two Ichabods are listed in the top-20 of the Central Region singles rankings which were released on Nov. 19, 2019.
- Haase checked in at No. 9 on the list while Dicu came in at No. 20.
- Haase is also ranked in doubles as he and partner Brill are ranked sixth in the Central Region.
BODS AND ENDS …
- Haase was named the MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Feb. 27 for his victories at No. 1 doubles and singles against McKendree.
- It was the first time in his career he had earned the weekly honor.
- Last season, Washburn was 5-1 when playing in Topeka.
- At the Washburn Tennis Complex, the Ichabods went 3-1.
- Brill is an undefeated 3-0 in singles action this spring.
- He now has 64 career wins in singles play, placing him in a tie for eighth alongside Matt Watson (1992-96) in the Washburn record books for most career victories.
- Haase is close behind in career singles victories and currently has 62 wins in his name.
INTERIM HEAD COACH DAVID PRICE …
- David Price was appointed the interim head coach for the 2020 spring season on January 22, 2020.
- Price has been in his second stint as an assistant coach for the Washburn tennis programs for past three seasons. He also previously served as an assistant under head coach Peg Marmet.
- He brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program.
- He was an Ichabod himself as he played for Washburn from 1988-92 where he played the No. 1 singles and doubles position.
- Price earned the NAIA singles and doubles champion titles at the No. 1 position his freshman year as well as winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles as a senior.
TAKE A LOOK AHEAD …
- Washburn concludes its three-match home stand this week against Tabor College on Friday, March 6. First serve at the Washburn Tennis Complex is set for 1 p.m.
