No. 1 Washburn rings up sweep at Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- No. 1 Washburn recorded its 12th sweep of the season on Saturday evening with a 3-0 win at Missouri Western. During the second set of the win, senior setter Allison Sadler achieved a milestone as she became the fifth Washburn player in program history to eclipse 3,000 career assists.

Washburn won by the set scores of 27-25, 25-20, and 25-10 to improve to 18-2 (10-1 MIAA).

After dropping the opening point, Washburn quickly jumped in front to an 8-2 lead. Missouri Western (12-8, 4-7 MIAA) put together several scoring runs to chip away at the deficit and knotted up the score at 19. The score was even at 20, 21, 23, 24, and 25 when back-to-back kills from Genna Berg closed out the first set win.

The Griffons held a tight 9-8 advantage in the second set when a kill by Allison Maxwell started a 5-0 run to give the Ichabods the lead for the remainder of the frame. Missouri Western pulled within two points at 16-14, but that was as close as it got as Washburn finished with a five point victory in the game.

The Ichabods led from start to finish of the third set and won six consecutive points midway through the frame to go in front, 18-7, with three-straight kills from Berg during that run. Washburn won the final five points of the match, capped off by a kill from Rece Rainey.

Washburn finished the match hitting .290 while holding the Griffons to their second-lowest attacking percentage of the season at .075. Washburn led in kills, 53-28, and in digs, 82-63.

Three Ichabods finished in double-figure kills led by Berg's 18. Maxwell hammered down a dozen kills and Sydney Fitzgibbons chipped in 10 with both middle blockers hitting over .430.

Sadler achieved her career milestone finishing the night with 42 assists and now has 3,019 in her time as an Ichabod. Faith Rottinghaus recorded 35 digs and Chloe Paschal scooped up 14 digs.

For the Griffons, Jessica Hendrix led the team with 10 kills.

Washburn returns home to Lee Arena next week with midweek matches against Fort Hays State (Tuesday, Oct. 19) and No. 4 Central Missouri (Thursday, Oct. 21).
