No. 1 Washburn rolls past Central Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 1-ranked Washburn extended its winning streak to six in a row after defeating Central Oklahoma in straight sets on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods remain at home for the next three matches and host Missouri Southern (Oct. 8) and Pittsburg State (Oct. 9) next weekend.

Washburn won by the set scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-16 and improved its record to 14-1 (6-0 MIAA).

Washburn jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the match, but a pair of 3-0 mini scoring runs by Central Oklahoma (12-3, 5-2 MIAA) gave the Bronchos an 8-7 advantage. The score was all knotted up at 8, 9, 10, and 11 until a huge kill by Genna Berg ignited a 5-0 scoring run to put the Ichabods in front, 16-11. Holding an 18-15 lead, Washburn closed out the set winning the final seven points, four of which were via Broncho errors.

It was back-and-forth to start the second game as neither team led by more than two points until a kill by Kelsey Gordon made it 11-8 for Washburn. With the Ichabods in front 15-11, another kill from Gordon started a run of five consecutive points to extend the lead. Berg finished off the 25-15 win with her fourth kill of the frame.

After the Ichabods won the first three points on kills, the Bronchos responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Central Oklahoma held a 6-5 lead when Berg landed a kill to even the score and start a 4-0 run. The Bronchos got within two at 11-9, but several mini scoring runs by Washburn added a cushion to its lead and the final set was closed out by four kills by three different Ichabods.

The Ichabods dominated offensively, as they hit .331 compared to Central Oklahoma's .102 attacking percentage and led 52-28 in kills. Washburn also landed all three service aces in the match and made seven total blocks while UCO finished with three.

Three Ichabods finished in double-figure kills, led by Jalyn Stevenson's 13 to also go with her eight digs and two aces. Kelsey Gordon smashed 11 kills and finished with a sizzling .524 hitting percentage. Berg contributed 10 kills while Allison Maxwell added eight kills on 12 attempts with one error to hit .583 on the day.
