Washburn Tennis Set For Busy Two Match Saturday

FIRST SERVE
  • Washburn tennis teams hosts two matchups on Saturday, October 23 against Rockhurst and William Jewell
  • The match versus Rockhurst starts at 10 a.m. and the William Jewell match begins at 3 p.m.
  • The women's team holds a 19-11 all-time record against Rockhurst and a 6-1 record against William Jewell
  • The men's team holds a 17-13 record against Rockhurst and are 14-0 against William Jewell
ICHABODS IN 2021
Men's
  • The Ichabods went 11-5 overall and 3-0 in conference under first-year head coach Kirby Ronning
  • Washburn men's team made it to the NCAA Central Regional before being defeated by #23 Northwest Missouri
  • By the end of the season, the team was ranked #17 in the nation. They defeated #18 Southeastern Oklahoma, #9 Flagler, #23 Northwest Missouri, and #19 Southern Arkansas during the season.
  • Raul-Alin Dicu ranked No. 31 at the end of the season with a record of 6-9
  • Miquel Perez ranked No. 38 with a record of 7-6
  • The doubles team of Bradley Eidenmueller and Sebastian Pjontek were ranked 17th with a record of 8-3
  • Six Ichabods are returning for the 2021-2022 season along with five freshmen
Women's
  • The Ichabods went 17-3 overall and 7-1 in conference under first -year head coach Kirby Ronning
  • Washburn women's team made it to the NCAA Tournament before No. 3 Central Oklahoma ended their season
  • The team ranked No. 16 in the nation when it was all said and done.  They faced five top-20 teams during the season going 2-3 (all three losses to Central Oklahoma). The Ichabods defeated No. 10 Flagler and No. 20 Augustana
  • Maja Jung and Maria Soler Valverde led the way combining for a 32-2 record. Jung will be returning this year for her second season with Washburn
  • In doubles, Jung and Kinsey Fields dominated going 12-4. The doubles team of Svea Crohn and Soler Valverde also won 12 matches with just one loss
  • Six Ichabods are returning for the 2021-2022 season along with three freshmen
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Rockhurst
  • The men's team went 7-8 and the women's team went 5-7 during the 2020-21 season.
  • It was the first year under Coach Jamie McDonald
  • The men's team is losing two players with the team's top records in Simon Birgerson and Nicolas Leon
  • They are bringing back five players along with five freshmen
  • The women are losing their top performer in Sam Czarnecki who had a record of 7-4. They will be close to a whole new team with three returners, six freshmen and a transfer in Valentine Limauge. Limauge from Gardner-Webb went 4-7 with the Bulldogs last season.
William Jewell
  • The men's team went 3-12 and the women's team finished with an 0-14 record during the 2020-21 season under third-year head coach Doug Elly.
  • The men's team is bring back the team leader in wins last season with five other returners. The team is also bringing in four freshman
  • The women will have four returners, four new freshman and a transfer in Katie Boyd. Boyd played at Johnson County Community College
HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING
  • Kirby Ronning is heading into his second season as the Washburn head tennis coach for the Ichabods men's and women's programs after being named to the position on July 23, 2020. Prior to Washburn, Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific, where he helped lead the Cougars to multiple NCAA postseason appearances and earned himself both ITA West Region's Men's Tennis Assistant Coach of the Year and Women's Tennis Assistant Coach of the Year. 
  • He earned his bachelor's degree in business from Bethel University (Minn) in 2014 and his master's in physical education from Azusa Pacific in May 2020.
  • Ronning also played at Bethel for four years, playing primarily at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles position.
TAKE A LOOK AHEAD
  • The Ichabods will finish their fall slate with these two matchups but will return Sunday, January 30 for their first mtchup of the spring against Ottawa at 1 p.m.
