WICHITA, Kan. -- Three Ichabods finished in double-digit kills as No. 4 Washburn broke out the brooms for the third time this week with a sweep victory at Newman on Saturday afternoon. Washburn closes out its regular season road schedule next week at Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern, Nov. 5-6.
The Ichabods won by the set scores of 28-26, 25-16, and 25-17 to check in at 22-3 (14-2 MIAA) on the year. Sixteen of Washburn's victories have been 3-0 decisions.
Washburn started off the match leading 3-1 when Newman started to battle back. The Jets took a 10-6 advantage after scoring four consecutive points and added on to their lead as the errors piled up for the Ichabods. Trailing 19-14,
Taylor Antonowich knocked down a kill to start a 4-1 run to pull Washburn within two points, 20-18. Newman won the following point, but a kill by
Genna Berg and then a string of three Jet errors in a row put the Ichabods in front, 22-21. The teams exchanged points and knotted up the score at 22 through 26 until back-to-back Ichabod kills gave them the first set win.
Newman held an early lead of 7-6 when three-straight kills gave Washburn a lead it would hold for the remainder of the game. A 10-2 scoring run pushed the Ichabods' advantage to 19-10 and then four kills in a row closed out the set win, with three of those kills coming from
Sydney Fitzgibbons.
The Ichabods jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the third frame. The Jets got the score within two points, 13-11, but that's as close as it would get as Washburn won seven of the next eight points to go up, 20-12. The Ichabods continued their attack and closed out the sweep with three kills by three different players.
The Ichabods finished the match just shy of the .300 mark as they hit .299 while the Jets finished with a .137 attacking percentage. Washburn led in kills, 53-35, and in digs, 64-51.
Berg paced the Ichabods with 14 kills and notched her second-consecutive double-double as she scooped up 10 digs. She also had two solo blocks.
Kelsey Gordon and Fitzgibbons chipped in 11 kills apiece and hit above .364.
Allison Sadler did a little of everything for the Ichabods as she finished with 45 assists, seven digs, two kills, a service ace and a solo block. Libero
Faith Rottinghaus led all players with 22 digs.
For Newman, Salome Romp had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Riley Daugherty also added 10 kills.
