TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 2 Washburn put together a well-rounded effort en route to defeating Missouri Western 3-0 on Friday evening. The Ichabods close out the regular season tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 13) against No. 5 Northwest Missouri for senior day. First serve in Lee Arena is set for 6 p.m. and the 10 Washburn seniors will be recognized at the conclusion of the match.
The Ichabods won by the set scores of 25-9, 25-15, and 25-11 to improve their record to 25-3 overall and 17-2 in MIAA matches. Washburn is currently one match behind Central Missouri in the MIAA standings. The Jennies finished the regular season on Thursday with a record of 25-3 (18-2 MIAA) and clinched at least a share of the MIAA regular season title.
Washburn knocked down 19 kills and did not commit an attacking error in the opening set while leading from start to finish.
Kassidy Pfeiffer closed out the 25-9 first set win with a service ace.
Missouri Western (14-14, 6-13 MIAA) captured the first two points of the second set and then back-and-forth scoring ensued as there were eight ties and five lead changes until Washburn went on a 4-0 run to take a 12-9 advantage. Holding a one-point lead, a kill from
Allison Maxwell sparked an 8-1 run to increase Washburn's lead to 21-13. The Ichabods won the final three points of the game and a block from
Sydney Fitzgibbons and
Kelsey Gordon sent Washburn to the third set with a 2-0 advantage.
Washburn jumped out to a commanding 12-3 lead in the third frame. Washburn pushed its lead to 21-7 after a 7-1 scoring run that consisted of seven kills from four different Ichabods. The sweep was clinched when setter
Jaycee Burghart snuck in an attack that landed for the final kill of the evening.
Washburn finished the match with a scorching .426 hitting percentage while Missouri Western hit .064. The Ichabods dominated offensively and defensively as they led in kills, 53-21, and in blocks, 9-3.
Genna Berg knocked down a team-best 13 kills and hit .542 on the night. Maxwell also finished in double-figure kills, recording 10 kills on 12 swings with zero errors for an .833 hitting percentage.
Kelsey Gordon and
Jalyn Stevenson both had nine kills.
Sydney Fitzgibbons was a part of seven blocks to go with her six kills.
Allison Sadler was one dig shy of a double-double as she had 35 assists and nine digs. In the back court,
Faith Rottinghaus led the team with 18 digs.
The Griffons were led by Allie Kearns' nine kills.
