Ichabods wrap up non-conference play with Ravens on Saturday

OPENING TIP
• The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up non-conference play with Benedictine on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. in Lee Arena.
• The Ichabods fell last time out to Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday 69-63.
• Benedictine is 6-3 this season coming off a 75-67 loss at John Brown.
• Saturday's game will count as an exhibition game for the Ravens.
• The Ichabods have won the last 24 meetings in the series and the two teams have not met since Nov. 11, 2001 in Topeka in a 92-59 win over the Ravens.
• The Ravens' last win over the Ichabods was on Dec. 8, 1977 in Atchison in a 79-63 win over the Ichabods.
• The game will be the final non-conference game for the Ichabods as they face Benedictine on Nov. 27 and then begin the 22-game MIAA slate with Fort Hays State on Dec. 1.
• The 2021-22 season marks the 117th season of Ichabod basketball.
• Washburn was picked second both the MIAA Coaches and Media preseason polls.

ICHABOD BITS
Jalen Lewis recorded a career-high 30 points last time out against Oklahoma Baptist and he leads the team in scoring at 15.8 ppg.
Michael Keegan is averaging 10.2 ppg.
Jaden Monday had a career-high six rebounds against Oklahoma Baptist.
Tyler Geiman became the 26th member of Washburn's 1,000-point club at Missouri Western last season … his career total is 1,394 in 116 career games, which is ninth all-time on the Ichabod chart … next on the chart is Dan Buie who scored 1,484 in two seasons from 1995-97.
Jalen Lewis is currently 18th on the Ichabod all-time scoring chart with 1,095 career points in 93 career games … Lewis also became only the sixth Ichabod to go over the 200 made 3-pointers mark now sitting with 208 which ranks fourth.
• Benedictine associate head coach John Peer had 15 points the last time the Ichabods and the Ravens played in 2001 hitting three 3-pointers going 5 of 10 from the field in 29 minutes.

COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
•is 84-41 in his fifth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 117-71 overall in his eighth year as a head coach.
• has led the Ichabods to three NCAA postseason appearances in four full seasons at Washburn.
• was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
• he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
• while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
• before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.
• prior to taking over the head coaching position at Baker, Ballard spent seven years on Bill Self's staff at Kansas, his alma mater.
• he played two years for the Jayhawks under head coach Roy Williams from 2000-02 after transferring from Hutchinson Community College in his hometown of Hutchinson, Kan. BENEDICTINE HEAD COACH RYAN MOODY
• is in his 11th season as the Ravens' head coach going 205-115.
• played for the Ravens from 1992 -1996 and graduated as the eighth-leading scorer in school history. He is also tied for all-time three-pointers made and was a three-time all-conference selection, including a pair of first-team honors.
• has never coached against the Ichabods.
 
ABOUT BENEDICTINE
• The Ravens are 6-3 coming off a 75-67 loss to John Brown on the road on Tuesday.
• Matt Austin leads the team in scoring at 15.4 ppg with Eric Krus scoring 12.3 and Jaiden Bristol scoring 12.1 ppg.
• The top eight scorers in the Raven line up are all seniors.
• The Ravens are averaging 74.3 ppg allowing 68.4 ppg.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Nov. 23, 2021) TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn junior guard Jalen Lewis' career-high 30 points was not enough as the Ichabods fell to Oklahoma Baptist 69-63 on Tuesday night in Lee Arena. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Benedictine in its final non-conference game of the season prior to hosting Fort Hays State on Dec. 1.
Lewis started out the game with a 3-pointer en route to a 4 of 8 performance from deep. Following Lewis' bucket, the Bison went on an 11-0 run as Jaquan Simms hit three 3-pointers in a 3:42 stretch pushing OBU up 11-3. With Washburn down 10 at 32-22 with 4:10 to play in the opening half, the Ichabods closed the frame on a 10-3 run sparked by nine points from Lewis to enter the locker room down 35-30.
In the second half, OBU scored the first six points of the half taking a 41-30 lead and went on to an 11-point advantage two more times before the Ichabods cut the margin to four at 51-47 with 8:09 to play.
OBU (2-2) went up by eight at 55-47 with 5:40 to go and a 6-2 run by the Ichabods cut the difference back to four again at 57-53 with 3:54 left. Washburn made one final push after trailing 65-55 with 1:11 to play after back-to-back 3-pointers by Lewis and Jeremy Harrell pulled Washburn to trailing 65-61 with 20 seconds to go, but OBU went 4 of 4 from the free throw line to hold on for the win.
Lewis led all scorers with 30 points going 13 of 20 from the field overall. Michael Keegan hd 10 points and Harrell had eight. Jaden Monday led the Ichabods with six rebounds while dishing out four assists scoring six points.
Burke Putnam led OBU with 22 points.
Washburn was 26 of 66 from the field (8 of 36 from deep) and hit 3 of 4 free throw attempts.  OBU was 25 of 48 overall and hit 6 of 12 3-pointers and 13 of 15 free throws including 12 of 13 in the second half.

LAST MEETING WITH BENEDICTINE
(Nov. 17, 2001) TOPEKA, Kan. - The Washburn Ichabods opened the season with a 92-59 win over Benedictine in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods put all five starters in double figures with Manny Clifton leading the way with 21 points. Nana Gbewonyo scored 13 points and Ryan Murphy had a double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Shannon Kruger had 12 points on four 3-pointers with six assists and Carlo Walton had 11 points.
 
ICHABOD BASKETBALL HISTORY
• The Ichabods are 1623-1100-2 all-time in the 117th year in the program's history.
• Washburn is the 10th-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
• Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 641-297 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
• The Ichabods have recorded 29 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
•  Washburn has won 21 conference championships including 10 MIAA titles.
•  Washburn has received 15 NCAA Tournament bids going to three Elite Eight's appearing in the 2001 NCAA National Championship game.
