TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn women's JV basketball wins the second straight home game over Haskell Indian Nation University, 64-57. The Ichabods did not shoot particularly well, only making about 32 percent from the field. It was Washburn's ability to score points from the paint that made the difference.
Haskell got the game started with a two-point jumper, but
Raegan Wells immediately responded with a basket of her own. Wells drew many fouls including two in the next three minutes. She made three of her four at the line to give the Ichabods a 5-2 lead.
Daphne Williams then hit a three to pull away. The Indians fought to tie the game up at 10 apiece with four minutes remaining. They went on a 13-2 run for a 15-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
Washburn bounced back with a
Drew DeLong layup to begin the second. Slowly, the Ichabods took back the lead with another Williams three-pointer and proceeded to drill another two in back-to-back possessions a minute later. Williams was second on the team with 17 points while going 5-for-11 from beyond the arc. Washburn held a nine-point lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wells scored eight points on 3-for-4 shooting. She helped the Ichabods build a stronger lead. Washburn led 50-38 into the final quarter.
The Fightin' Indians Angela Astorga had stepped up in the fourth to give her team a chance. Her 14 points in the quarter made it a two-possession game with six minutes remaining. The Ichabods were able to hold on to win.
Washburn outscored Haskell in the paint by 10. Wells was a big part of that as she led the team with 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds (7 offensive rebounds). That is back-to-back double-doubles for Wells.
Maddy Hutley and Jaden Newfarmer each had 11 rebounds. Newfarmer also made seven assists, blocked two shots, and stole the ball twice.
Ichabods have Senior Night on Tuesday against Kansas City Kansas Community College. Ichabods try to get above .500 to end their season starting at 5:30 p.m.
