ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Washburn baseball team outscored Missouri Western a combined 16-1 on Saturday as the Ichabods won both ends of the doubleheader. Both teams are now 2-5 on the young season while Washburn improves to 2-1 in MIAA play and Missouri Western checks in at 1-2 MIAA.
The Ichabods are scheduled to open their home schedule next week against No. 18-ranked Missouri Southern. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m. at Falley Field.
GAME ONE (Washburn 8-Missouri Western 0)
It was all Washburn in game one.
Peter Shearer drove home
Brett Ingram with a single to left field for the first two runs of the game, first in the second inning and then in the fourth.
Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli and
Parker Dunn both scored in the fifth to make it 4-0 in favor of Washburn.
The Ichabods capitalized on several miscues committed by the Griffons in the sixth inning to add three more runs.
The final Washburn run was scored by De Leon off of
Quinn Waterbury's single.
Washburn out-hit Missouri Western, 15-3, in the shutout victory. The Griffons struggled defensively and committed four errors in the contest.
Nine different Ichabods recorded at least one hit as Bowlin led the way going 3-4 and drove in two runs. Hinostroza, Shearer, Dunn, and
Kros Bay all landed two hits and combined for five RBI.
Washburn starter
Brock Gilliam picked up the shutout victory after allowing just one hit and one walk over six innings while striking out a career-high 12. He did not allow a runner on base until the fifth inning.
Julian Zamora went two innings and walked two and gave up one hit, but struck out three.
Trevor Marreel closed out the win and added a strikeout.
GAME TWO (Washburn 8-Missouri Western 1)
The first and second innings started with a Washburn leadoff single and then stolen base to get into scoring position, eventually resulting in a run scored.
Missouri Western cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Ichabods added two insurance runs in the seventh to go up 4-1. Washburn then finished out the scoring with four runs on four hits in the eighth.
Emerson finished the game 3-4 and was responsible for half of Washburn's runs as he scored twice and then drove in two more. De Leon was 3-5 and scored twice and collected an RBI.
Sean McElwee pitched a gem for the win, going seven innings and allowing one unearned run and five hits while fanning seven. Huggins and Casillas pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively, and did not allow a Griffon to reach base.
