Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Washburn women's tennis team opened the spring season with a well-fought victory, 4-3, over Drury on Sunday. This win symbolizes the first win of the
Kirby Ronning era as he took the helm of the tennis programs in July 2020.
Washburn swept Drury to take the doubles point. The duo of
Maja Jung and
Kinsey Fields notched the first win as they defeated their opponents with a score of 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
Cadence Lynn and
Marta Torres beat their opponent, 6-4, at the third spot in the lineup.
Logan Morrissey and
Svea Crohn secured the sweep as they took a 7-5 triumph over their opponent from the top of the lineup.
The Ichabods fell swiftly to 1-3 as they lost the first three singles points but the bottom of the order took charge.
Maria Soler Valverde defeated her opponent with scores of 6-2 and 6-4 from the No. 4 spot. Jung followed with a tough battle which she overcame to take down her opponent from the fifth spot in the lineup with scores of 2-6, 6-3 and 7-5. After losing her first set in the sixth spot, Lynn stepped up to the plate to win against her opponent with scores of 5-7, 6-2 and 6-1, clinching Washburn's 4-3 victory over Drury.
The Ichabods head home for their home opener against William Jewell on February 21. The match is set to start at 12 p.m. (CT) at the Genesis Tennis Center in Topeka, Kan.
