Washburn baseball holds on for win over Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Brett Ingram hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth to break the 10-10 tie game as Washburn scored five late runs and held off Pittsburg State's own ninth inning rally to capture the 15-14 road victory on Sunday evening.

The Ichabods (4-7, 4-3 MIAA) broke open the game in the top of the third with six runs on three hits and capitalized on two Gorilla errors. With one out and runners on second and third, Xavier De Leon singled up the middle to score two. De Leon stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a dropped infield pop-up. Zion Bowlin's double to left center brought in two more runs and a throwing error by the cutoff man allowed him to advance to third. An infield single by Ingram scored Bowlin for the sixth run of the frame.

The Gorillas (6-4, 3-4 MIAA) responded with one run in the home half of the third to make it 6-1.

Washburn added two more runs in the fourth to push its lead to 8-1. With Ichabods on first and second, De Leon hit another RBI single up the middle to score Peter Shearer and send Cole Emerson to third. De Leon attempted to steal second, but while he was caught in a run down, Emerson made a mad dash home to score.

Pittsburg State started its comeback in the bottom of the fifth and outscored Washburn 9-2 combined between the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. A two-RBI single by the Gorillas tied up the game at 10 in the bottom of the seventh. Washburn reliever Casey Steward recorded three-straight strikeouts to end the inning.

A thick fog that engulfed the field during the late innings made fielding difficult for both teams.

Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli got things going in the top of the ninth with a one out single to left field. Up next was Parker Dunn, who was hit by the pitch. Both Ichabods moved up one place on the base paths on a ground out. Ingram stepped up to the plate and ripped a double that scored both runners to put Washburn back in front. The Ichabods kept the line moving with a single, double, and another single to finish out the inning with five total runs scored with two outs.

The Gorillas weren't done yet, though, as they added four runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded with two out. Trevor Marreel put an end to their rally and got the final out himself on a groundout to the mound.

Ingram finished the night going 3-5 and had four RBI and scored once. De Leon had two hits, one run scored and drove in three. Shearer also had two hits and scored four of Washburn's runs.

Out of the bullpen, Steward earned his first career win and Mareel posted his first save. Washburn starter Rane Pfeifer received a no decision after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out the first five batters he faced and retired the Gorillas in order in the first and fourth inning by way of strikeouts, finishing with a career-best 10.

The series is set to wrap up tomorrow (Monday) with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
