Washburn baseball defeats Northwest Missouri, 10-7

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn baseball team scored in all but two innings in Wednesday night's 10-7 non-conference victory over Northwest Missouri.

Northwest Missouri (6-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a lead off single followed by a triple and an RBI groundout.

The Ichabods (7-10) got one run back in the home half of the inning. Xavier De Leon led off the frame with a single and then got in scoring position on a steal. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Brett Ingram's single through the left side.

A leadoff single by Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli started off the four-run second inning for Washburn. Peter Shearer drew a walk to put runners on first and second and both runners moved up on a passed ball by the Northwest Missouri catcher. Ball number four to Cole Emerson was a wild pitch that allowed Clark-Chiapparelli to make a mad dash safely home to tie up the game. De Leon reached on a fielder's choice that scored Shearer. After advancing to third on Kros Bay's double, De Leon scored on a sacrifice fly by Ingram. Bay scored the final run of the inning on a single hit by Parker Dunn.

Washburn tacked on two runs in the fourth with some aggressive base running. Shearer walked for the second time in as many at bats and then stole second and advanced to third on Cole Emerson's infield single. De Leon's sacrifice fly scored Shearer to make it 6-2 in favor of the Ichabods. Emerson moved up to third on Bay's single and then scored on a failed pickoff attempt towards the pinch runner on first.

A solo home run by Clark-Chiapparelli in the fifth put Washburn up, 8-2.

The Bearcats responded with one run of their own in the sixth inning.

With nearly a whole new Washburn batting order in the sixth inning after six substitutions, Andrew Schmidtlein stepped up to the plate and sent a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence for his first collegiate hit to push the Ichabod lead to 9-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carson Sader hit a one-out triple and Wyatt Featherston recorded the final Washburn RBI of the evening with a double down the left field line to easily score Sader.

Northwest Missouri had two hits and capitalized on three walks to put up four runs in the top of the eighth to cut Washburn's lead to three, 10-7.

The Bearcats made some noise in the ninth with runners on first and second with one out before a tailor-made 6-4-3 double play ended the game.

Clark-Chiapparelli finished the day 2-3 at the plate with a homer and scored two runs. Bay, Dunn, and Eric Hinostroza all had two hits. De Leon drove in two runs and scored twice himself.

Washburn starter Jared Sharp received the win, going three innings and allowing two runs while striking out three. Phil Brenneman was tabbed with the loss for Northwest Missouri. Making his season debut, Michael Schurig earned the save after coming on in the ninth inning to close out the game.

The Ichabods return to conference play this weekend on the road at No. 5-ranked Central Missouri starting with a doubleheader on Saturday.
