Washburn baseball falls to Pittsburg State in non-conference game

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn baseball team fell to Pittsburg State in non-conference action on Tuesday evening, 11-1. The Ichabods will remain at home and host rival Emporia State for three games starting Friday at 5 p.m.

After the Gorillas (16-7) put up two runs in the top of the third, the Ichabods (8-16) got one run back in the home half of the inning. Xavier De Leon singled through the left side and Eric Hinostroza followed that up with a single of his own poked through the right side. A few pitches later, De Leon successfully swiped third base and a throwing error committed by Pittsburg State's catcher allowed him to safely reach home.

The following inning, the Pittsburg State offense poured on five runs on five hits to go up 7-1. The Gorillas added another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Cole Emerson led off the seventh with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a two-out single by Hinostroza, but a groundout would end the game early.

De Leon went 2-4 at the dish and scored the Washburn run. Hinostroza also added two hits on the night.

Washburn starter Joel Casillas received the loss, going 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three. Zach Curry of Pittsburg State earned the win, working five innings and surrendering one unearned run and five hits to go with five strikeouts.
