EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 20 Washburn men's tennis team concluded their season as the Ichabods fell to Northwest Missouri, 4-3, in the semifinal round of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament on Friday.
Washburn took the early advantage as they took the doubles point on two straight wins from the No. 2 and 1 doubles spots, in that order. The duo of
Paul Haase and
Miquel Perez took a 6-3 win from the second spot to get things going on a good note.
Bradley Eidenmueller and
Sebastian Pjontek then followed with a 6-3 victory from the top of the lineup to give the Ichabods the doubles point.
In singles action, Eidenmueller started things off with a 6-2, 6-0 victory from the No. 4 spot.
Daniel Bird then put the Ichabods up a commanding 3-0 as he defeated his opponent by set scores of 6-4, 6-3 at the fifth spot. At the No. 2 spot, No. 37 ranked singles player Perez went face-to-face with the Bearcats' Fabien Calloud, taking the match to three sets but ultimately falling by scores of 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.
Marc Roura Casi then fell by scores of 3-6, 4-6 from the bottom of the lineup.

Raul-Alin Dicu fell to No. 6 Andrea Zamurri at the top of the lineup by set scores of 6-3, 6-7 (0-7), 0-6 as the Bearcats tied the match at 3-3. With the winning point on the line, Haase took his opponent Franco Oliva to three sets at the No. 3 spot. Haase won the first set by 7-6 (8-6) but Oliva took the second set by 6-3 to take the match to a third set. In the third set, Oliva took a swift 3-0 lead but Haase battled back, getting as close as one point with a 2-3 score and later two points with a 3-5 score. Oliva eventually took the final point for a 6-3 third set win, sending the Bearcats to a 4-3 victory over the Ichabods.
Washburn ends its season with an 11-5 overall record. Northwest Missouri advances to the NCAA Central Regional final with a 15-4 record overall.
Notes on 2020-21 season:
- Kirby Ronning led the men's team to an impressive 11-5 record in his first season as head coach of the program.
- Five Ichabods were named to the All-MIAA Second Team Paul Haase at No. 3, Bradley Eidenmueller at No. 4, Daniel Bird at No. 5 and Marc Roura Casi at No. 6. Haase and Miquel Perez also earned the award at No. 2 doubles.
- Two Ichabods were named to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention team as well as Raul Alin Dicu earned the award at No. 1 singles and Miquel Perez earned the award at No. 2 singles.
- Senior Paul Haase ended his collegiate career with the fourth most career doubles wins (82) and fifth most career singles wins (71) in program history. Haase had a 10-5 doubles record and 94 record in singles in his final season.
- DI transfer Daniel Bird made a stellar first impression in his first season as an Ichabod, recording an 8-1 singles record and 7-4 doubles record.
- Bradley Eidenmueller had a career-best 11-1 singles record in his final season as an Ichabod, going a perfect 10-0 in the regular season. He also earned a 10-5 doubles record, including 8-3 with partner Sebastian Pjontek at the No. 1 spot.
- The Ichabods made their 15th NCAA Regional appearance and 17th MIAA Tournament appearance in school history.
