No. 16 women’s tennis concludes season after loss to No. 3 UCO in NCAA regional final

EDMOND, Okla. – The No. 16 Ichabod women's tennis team concluded their spring after the Ichabods fell to Central Oklahoma, 4-1, in the NCAA Central Regional finale on Sunday.
 
Washburn got off to a hot start by winning the doubles points with victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. After the Bronchos won the No. 2 doubles spot, Marta Torres and Logan Morrissey earned a 7-5 victory from the top of the lineup. The duo of Svea Crohn and Maria Soler Valverde then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win from the third spot.
 
In singles play, the Bronchos battled back against the Ichabods. Crohn fell at the second spot to No. 7 ranked singles player Mae Canete by set scores of 6-0, 6-0. Morrissey was then defeated by scores of 6-3, 6-2 at the fifth spot. Torres fell to No. 5 Adel-Byanu Abidullina by 6-0, 6-2 at the No. a spot. Cadence Lynn dropped her match by set scores of 6-3, 6-3 at the bottom of the lineup as Washburn fell to Central Oklahoma, 4-1, in the NCAA Central Regional finale.
 
The Ichabods end their season with a 17-3 overall record. The Bronchos continue on to the NCAA Championship with a 20-1 record this season.
 
Notes on 2020-21 season: 
  • In his first season at the reins of the tennis programs, Kirby Ronning led the women's team to an outstanding 17-3 record.
  • Maria Soler Valverde was named to the All-MIAA First Team at No. 3 singles. 
  • Three Ichabods were named to the All-MIAA Second Team, including Maja Jung at No. 5 singles and Maria Soler Valverde/Svea Crohn at No. 3 doubles.
  • Six Ichabods were named to the All-MIAA Honorable Mention team- Marta Torres at No. 1 singles, Svea Crohn at No. 2 singles, Logan Morrissey at No. 4 singles and Cadence Lynn at No. 6 singles. Morrissey and Torres at No. 1 doubles and Kinsey Fields/Maja Jung earned honorable mention as well.
  • Senior Logan Morrissey ended her collegiate career with a program-best 94 career doubles wins and seventh most career singles wins (69) in program history. Morrissey had a 14-4 doubles record and 6-8 record in singles in her final season.
  • Maria Soler Valverde had a career-best 16-1 singles record in her final season as an Ichabod, going a perfect 15-0 in the regular season. She also earned a 13-1 doubles record, including 12-1 with partner Svea Crohn at the No.3 spot.
  • Freshmen Marta Torres and Maja Jung had impressive first seasons at Washburn. Torres had a 12-8 singles record and earned herself a bump up to the top of the lineup where she went 9-6. She also went 13-6 in doubles action, also being bumped up to the No. 1 spot where she had a 9-3 record with Logan Morrissey. Jung played mostly from the No. 5 singles spot and earned a 16-1 record in her first season. She had a 13-4 record in doubles, mostly with partner Kinsey Fields at the No. 2 spot.
  • Cadence Lynn was a strong force at the bottom of the lineup for the Ichabods, earning a 12-4 singles record. 
  • The Ichabods made their 17th NCAA Regional appearance and 17th MIAA Tournament appearance in school history.
