Washburn Soccer Starts Season 2-0

The Washburn soccer team opens the 2021 campaign with two wins against William Jewell and Augustana. The Ichabods had not beaten the Augustana Vikings since 2005. Looking to stay undefeated, the Ichabods travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Tritons.

First Game on the Road

For the first time this season, Washburn will be traveling and will do so in back to back games

Washburn in 2019 went 2-7 on the road and overall the program holds a record of 54-87-19 on the road. While under Coach Phillips the team has done just as well at home as on the road with a record of 11-13-2 for both

Their last road game in 2019 was at University of Central Missouri during the MIAA Tournament where Washburn lost 2-1 ending their season. The last non-conference road game was against Colorado State University - Pueblo in a win while their last road loss was against Oklahoma Baptist in the 2019 season opener

Ichabods Last Week

Washburn starts the season 2-0 after defeating William Jewell 1-0 and Augustana 2-1. The Ichabods last started the season with back-to-back wins in 2018 before losing the next game to William Jewell in their first meeting ever

Tera Lynch scored all three goals for the Ichabods and in different ways, one off a normal shot the next off a free kick and the final one on a penalty kick

Scouting Missouri - St. Louis

The University of Missouri - St. Louis Tritons of the GLVC Conference went 5-11-1 overall in 2019 and all five wins were against conference opponents

The Tritans with a great start to the season are also coming in 2-0 defeating Delta State 2-1 and St. Martin's 1-0

It's the Tritons first time going 2-0 to start the season since their 2013 campaign

Standout Players

Senior Mia Milazzo continues to do her thing

In 2019, Milazzo led the team in assist and was second on the team in both points (6) and shots (21). She did score one goal as well

Once again this season, she has yet to score a goal but has continued to be a shot producer being second on the team with four all being on-goal. Milazzo has has also already assisted a goal

Freshman Duo has the offense rolling

Two incoming freshman, Jaycee Cotton and Eylesa Kellam, have accounted for two of the teams three goals. In addition, Cotton leads the team with six shots with four being on target

Kellam only needed one shot to score and win the game for the Tritons against St. Martin's

Tritons have started two different keepers in their first two games

In the very first game, junior Paige Schwartz started but only for the first half then came in junior Byrnne Qualley

Qualley allowed the first goal of the season in the second half however the coaches saw enough to give her the start against St. Martin's. She played almost 84 of the 90 minutes and didn't allow a single goal as the Tritons went on to win 1-0

About the Coach

named the sixth head coach in Tritons history

Previously served as an assistant coach at Central Missouri from 2017-2019

Washburn Soccer Travel to Oklahoma Christian

The Washburn soccer team, heads on the road for the second time to play Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, Sept. 11

Tera Lynch leads Washburn Offense

Lynch not only scored all three Ichabod goals but also shot at the goal a total of 13 times and did it with accuracy. She landed nine shots on-goal out of her 13 shots taken

She tallied two game-winning goals (she had two in all of 2019) which includes the lone goal against William Jewell and the penalty kick goal that took the 2-1 lead on Augustana after 56 minutes into the game

Lynch played 161 minutes in the first two games the second most by any non defender or goalie

Lynch scored two goals in a game back in 2019 when Washburn defeated Central Oklahoma, 3-2. It was also the first time a Washburn player had taken seven shots in a game since Josie Rimmer did it in 2018

Defense Remains Strong

Despite losing their defensive leader in Kati Sneegas, the Washburn defense has stepped up. The trio of Carlee Thompson, Emily Michaelis and Mattie Miano has proven to be a tough task for opposing teams

The defense has held on to win two tight, one goal games. In the first game, they shut out William Jewell and allowed the Cardinals to shoot just three times all game. In their second, they did let up a goal early off a corner however the Ichabods went on to hold the Vikings scoreless for the rest of the game allowing the offense to comeback

Goalkeeper Raegan Wells has not seen the ball much because of the defense but still has compiled  4 saves and a 0.800 save percentage

Scouting Oklahoma Christian

The Oklahoma Christian University of the LSC Conference went 3-15 overall in 2019 and 3-10 in the conference. In the Preseason Coaches Poll they are ranked 13th out of the 14 conference teams

The Eagles wll be playing in just their second game of the season as they look to have a better start to the 2021 season

Their season opener on September 9, the Eagles will take on Central Oklahoma who fell just out of the top 25 nationally. Central Oklahoma split in the first week and hold a 1-1 record

The Lone Star Conference includes nationally ranked No. 19 Angelo State

Standout Players

Starting Goal Keeper, Gabby Goddard returns for her sophomore campaign

In 2019, Goddard started all 18 games as a freshman for the Tritons

Tough year as she faced 344 shots however she played well and saved 124 of them which was 14th in the Division 2

Big names Returning for 2021

The Eagles are losing Brianna Concienne and Denise Bennett who both started most of the 2019 season, but are keeping three of their top five in points and two of their top 3 goal scorers

Junior Natalie Thomas is a key piece for the 2021 Eagles. She only appeared in 12 games while starting in 10 in 2019 and still was able to lead the team with three goals and seven points with the fourth most shots (18)

Another big returner is Carson Hazel. In 2019, she scored two goals also assist twice and shot 26 times which was good for second on the team

Freshman that Need and Could Step Up

Freshman defender, Reagan Kaiser fills a huge need for the Eagles. Kaiser comes from Colony High School where she was named defensive MVP of District 8-5A. Since Oklahoma Christian allowed 344 shots to be taken in 2019 there is a need for an elite defender. She did start in all 11 games during spring of 2020 and the defense still allowed 220 shots

Another big freshman contributor could be Grace Cornelius. She started all 10 games she played in during the spring of 2020 and tallied two goals. In high school, she helped her team reach the Class 6A title game in 2018 and 2019 and earned All-Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference First-Team
