Ichabods continue homestand hosting Newman on Wednesday

OPENING TIP
•The Washburn Ichabods are back in action Wednesday night in Lee Arena hosting Newman at 7:30 p.m.
•The Ichabods (11-7, 8-4 MIAA) have won five of their last six games and seven of their last nine overall.
•The Ichabods won their last game with a buzzer-beater over Emporia State by Jalen Lewis sending the Ichabods to a 68-65 win on Saturday.
•The Jets (4-11, 1-9 MIAA) are coming off an 82-53 loss to Northwest Missouri on Saturday. The Jets have had two games this season postponed with COVID protocols.
•The Ichabods won the first meeting of the season on Dec. 11 in Wichita in a 72-61 victory over the Jets.
•The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Newman 27-7 and have won the last six games in a row.
•Washburn is 20-1 in games played in Topeka in the series winning the last 17 straight. Newman's only win in Topeka came on Feb. 12, 1980 in a 68-56 win.
•The 2021-22 season marks the 117th season of Ichabod basketball.
•Washburn was picked second both the MIAA Coaches and Media preseason polls.

•Jalen Lewis leads the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg hitting 39 of 97 3-pointers (.402).
•Tyler Geiman is averaging 13.2 ppg with 6.6 rpg and 6.3 apg in 11 games this season … he is averaging 14.3 ppg with 7.1 rebounds per game in conference play this season … Geiman went over the 600 assist plateau against Missouri Western and the 600 rebound mark in his career against Missouri Southern … Geiman is also ranked second in the NCAA D2 ranks in active assists with 627 and 12th in assist average at 5.0 … overall Geiman is 10th in all divisions of active career assists.
•Michael Keegan is scoring 9.8 ppg with 6.1 rebounds per game, 1.1 blocks per game and 1.5 steals per game … he is averaging 9.1 points and 7.1 rpg in MIAA play … he is third in the MIAA in blocked shots, ranks eighth in the MIAA in rebounds, ninth in steals and 21st in minutes played.
•Connor Deffebaugh is scoring 9.4 ppg and has averaged 14.7 ppg in is last three games.
•Tyler Nelson is scoring 7.5 ppg with 3.0 rpg and 2.3 apg in six games playing an average of 25.2 minutes a game.
•Jeremy Harrell had a season-high eight rebounds against Emporia State adding seven points and is averaging 8.7 ppg and 3.8 rpg.
•Jonny Clausing is scoring is averaging 7.7 ppg and has scored 12 points in each of the Ichabods' last two games.
•Tyler Geiman became the 26th member of Washburn's 1,000-point club and his career point total stands at 1,537 points in 126 career games, which is eighth all-time on the Ichabod chart … next on the chart is Ewan Auguste who scored 1,636 points from 1997-2001 … Geiman's 220 career 3-pointers is third all-time at Washburn and his 599 career 3-point attempts is first on the Ichabod charts passing Shannon Kruger's 584.
•Jalen Lewis was the 27th member of the Ichabod 1,000-point club and is currently 13th on the Ichabod all-time scoring chart with 1,257 career points in 106 career games and needs two points to pass Kyle Wiggins on the all-time chart … Lewis also became only the sixth Ichabod to go over the 200 made 3-pointers mark now sitting with 236 which ranks second behind all-time leader Shannon Kruger who hit 242 in 122 games.

COACHES
WASHBURN ICHABOD HEAD COACH BRETT BALLARD
•is 93-45 in his fifth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 126-75 overall in his eighth year as a head coach.
•has led the Ichabods to three NCAA postseason appearances in four full seasons at Washburn.
•was named the Washburn Ichabod men's basketball head coach on April 6, 2017 after spending the 2014-15 to 2016-17 seasons as an assistant coach with the Wake Forest basketball program after working under head coach Danny Manning 2014-17 seasons and at the University of Tulsa during the 2012-14 seasons.
•he helped Wake Forest to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2009-10 season following the 2016-17 season.
•while at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane played in the postseason both years, including earning a No. 13 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Tulsa also participated in the 2013 CBI, finishing that season with a winning record of 17-16 overall.
•before joining Manning at Tulsa, Ballard spent two seasons as the head basketball coach at Baker University going 33-30 overall, including a 21-12 mark in his final season at the helm in 2011-12.

ABOUT NEWMAN
•The Jets are 4-11 overall and 1-9 in the MIAA and 0-6 in road games this season having lost their last game out to Northwest Missouri on Jan. 22 82-53.
•Newman is 12th in the MIAA in scoring at 66.4 ppg in scoring offense and 10th in the league in scoring defense at 73.8 ppg.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Jan. 22, 2022) TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn Jalen Lewis connected on a 3-pointer as time expired sending the Ichabods to a 68-65 win over Emporia State on Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods and the Hornets (14-4, 9-3 MIAA) were tied at 55 with 4:51 to go. After ESU hit a pair of free throws to go up 58-56, Michael Keegan hit a 3-pointer staking Washburn to a 58-56 lead with 4:39 remaining. The lead was short-lived as the Hornets hit a 3-pointer of their own to go up by one, however Jalen Lewis hit a 17-foot jumper as the Ichabods went back up one at 60-59. However the Hornets came back and hit one of their own.
Washburn after the teams traded baskets again, Tyler Geiman hit a jumper and then added a free throw after an ESU miss with 26 seconds as the Ichabods led 65-63. ESU's Trey Buchanan hit a jumper in the paint tying the score with 13 seconds to play setting up Lewis' winner off of Geiman's eighth assist of the day.
Geiman led the Ichabods with 18 points adding a team-high nine rebounds and Jonny Clausing finished with 12 points and seven rebounds adding two blocks. Five of his rebounds were on the offensive side. Lewis finished with 11 points and Keegan had 10.
Jumah'Ri Turner led all scorers with 29 points.
Washburn finished 26 of 59 from the field for a 44 percent average holding ESU to 35 percent shooting and 15 points under their scoring average on the season.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH NEWMAN
•Wednesday's meeting with the Jets is the 35th all-time.
•The Ichabods lead the all-time series 27-7.
•The Ichabods have won the last 22 of the last 24 meetings with the Jets and the last five overall.
•Washburn is 6-5 against Newman in games played in Wichita after the win earlier this season.

LAST MEETING WITH NEWMAN
(Dec. 11, 2021) WICHITA, Kan. – Washburn scored 47 in the second half to top Newman, 72-61, in Wichita on Saturday evening.
It was a low-scoring first half with a combined 47 points for both teams. Michael Keegan was the offense for the first five minutes. He scored six of the offense's eight points while he was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field.
The Ichabods led 11-5 at the 14:22 mark before letting up an 11-2 run in five minutes. Washburn slowly chipped away and then Levi Braun hit a triple to take the lead back with 5:35 remaining in the half. Keegan scored four more in the waning minutes to give the Ichabods a 25-22 halftime lead.
The fireworks began in the second half. Washburn scored the same number of points themselves as both teams combined in the first half. It started when Jalen Lewis hit a three to make it a 30-25 game. He went on the score his first eight points in the next two minutes.
Newman was able to make it a one-point game with 13:40 remaining in the game. Then, the Ichabods went on a 10-0 run to make their lead 51-40. Washburn was able to maintain the large lead by hitting from in the paint.
Keegan led the Ichabods with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Keegan also led the team with eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Geiman and Braun each had 13 points as well. Geiman also dished out eight assists, that's the second game in a row.
NU was led by Stevie Strong's 21 points. Strong shot 5-of-13 from the field and hit four from deep. Ian Lee also scored 16 points.
WU finished with just 11 turnovers compared to Newman's 19.

•The Ichabods are 1632-1104-2 all-time in the 117th year in the program's history.
•Washburn is the 10th-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 650-301 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
•The Ichabods have recorded 29 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
