TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn men's tennis split matches against Omaha, winning a tight first match, 4-3, and then losing the second, 4-0.
 
The Mavericks took the lead in both matches as they earned the doubles point. Each time, Omaha won the first two doubles competitions.
 
Tim Hammes scored Washburn's first point from the No. 4 spot in the singles competition. Hammes won in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Sebastian Pjontek also won in two sets. Matthew Earle lost 1-6 in the first set but came back to win the second set 7-5 and the third, 6-4. Daniel Bird earned the winning point with his three-set victory.
 
In the second match, Washburn was unable to have the same success. Hammes was the only Ichabod player to win the first set. Hammes lost the second set but did not finish the match, with Omaha already having enough points for the victory.
 
In Santiago Rendon's first action as an Ichabod, he forced the third set with a 6-1 set 2. Rendon would also not finish his match.
 
The Ichabods host the first official match of the spring season on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. against Rockhurst.
