MOUNT BARRY, Ga. -- Washburn tennis wrapped up its first day at the ITA Cup with a win in the singles bracket and two round of 16 losses in doubles.  
After a two-hour rain delay Sonia Smagina was able to kick off the day for the Ichabods with a win in the women's singles position. Smagina claimed the victory in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-1. She advances into the quarterfinals where she will face Elenora Liga from Azusa Pacific University on Friday morning.  
Smagina stayed busy and joined with Lara Schmid next for the pairs round of 16 doubles match. The duo fell in the opening set 6-3 but were able to quickly recover and take a 6-1 victory in set two. They came up just short in the third and final set, losing a 10-8 tiebreaker.  
On the men's side for doubles, Sebastian Pjontek and Tim Hammes got off to a similar start, losing the first set 6-3. They would not be able to recover in the second set, dropping it again, 6-3. Consolation play for both men's and women's doubles tournaments will continue Friday.  
Overall play on Friday will begin with women's singles at 9 a.m. est, followed by men's singles, women's doubles and men's doubles to finish the day.
